History of Video Technology

1961 -The helical scanning technique invented allowing for thinner tapes. Ampex, JVC, Sony, and RCA all release VTRs that use this helical scanning technique.

1962 -JVC and Machtronics release VTRs that use 1 inch wide tape.

1963 -Ampex releases the EDITEC allowing for instant frame by frame video editing and animation. The old splicing technique now is obsolete by instant electric editing.

1964 -Ampex releases the VR-2000, the first high quality color VTR.

1965 -The first home VTR is released by Ampex for $1095.

1966 -Sony�s CV-2000 VTR is released for home use.

1967 -Ampex releases the VR-3000 that is a color VTR that is portable. This allows for sporting events to be taped and instantly shown in slow motion. A downhill skiing competition in Colorado is the first sporting event to use the VR-3000 and its slow motion capabilities. This invention will change the commercial sport institution.

1969 -American company Cartridge TV releases "Cartrivision" VCR that uses 1/4 inch cassette tapes. Japanese equipment is higher in quality and lower in cost, so by 1973 Cartrivision is off the market.
Andre Blay and Lee Nicholson start the Magnetic Video Corporation and begin to sell videocassette tapes.
