History of Video Technology

1975 -Sony�s Betamax hits the home market for $2,300 (TV included). The Betamax uses 1/2 inch tape stored in a cartridge.

1976 -MCA/Universal and Walt Disney studios bring up a lawsuit against Sony for copyright infringement. This is the beginning of what will become the Betamax Case.

1977 -JVC enters the home video market by introducing the video home system or VHS recorder. The VHS system has worse quality than the Betamax, but the VHS tape had two hours worth of recording time, while Betamax only had one.
Andre Blay purchases rights from 20th Century Fox to release their films on videotapes and creates the Video Club of America. This is the first videotapes of major Hollywood films that consumers can buy.

1978 -JVC releases the first portable VHS video recorder.
