Video Evidence in Court

China

Video containing evidence of forced abortions was used as testimony in a hearing that could sway decisions on future foreign policy with China. In June of 1998, the House of Representatives' International Relations subcommittee on human rights called a hearing on China. A video was shown as evidence of China’s enforcement of its one-child policy.

The video - showing an aborted fetus, operating room and detention cell - conflicts with China's previous assertions that forced abortions and sterilizatons are not policy. Politicians and human rights activists are concerned that if U.S. policy towards China does not change, they will continue with the alleged human rights abuses.

"To date, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed eight bills banning Chinese products allegedly made by slave or convict labor, and barring U.S. travel by Chinese officials who engage in religious persecution or forced abortions." (cnn.com)

The video of China's human rights transgressions allowed the U.S. politicians to make decisions based on evidence, rather than on the words of the Chinese leaders.
