In 1974, KMOX-TV became the first television station to replace its entire film equipment with electronic newsgathering (ENG) equipment. This date marks the beginning of a revolution in the television industry, which was caused by the evolution of the technology of video. In the ensuing years, every major television station in the nation followed KMOX's lead, rendering film an obsolete tool in the field of news production. The Democratic and Republican Conventions in 1976 share the distinction as the first events of national interest whose coverage was dominated by ENG technology, and one year later, the trend moved across the Atlantic Ocean as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) entered a twelve-month trial period with ENG (Yorke 85-6).
