Day One
I'm in trouble this time for sure. Mom's never stayed mad at me for
very long before, but I think that's because I never did anything this
stupid. Yesterday was bad enough, right? Walking the Pattern. All I
ever hear is, "Bartholomew, don't walk that Pattern." What Pattern? I'd
never seen the thing, right? I mean, I knew where it was. Auntie Queen
used to show it to me all the time. "That's the Pattern room,
Bartholomew. Do you know what we keep in there?" Gee, lemme guess. So
yesterday I'm talking to Annie, the daughter of some dignitary or other,
and we're just deciding that she hasn't seen all that Rebma has to offer,
when Auntie Queen pops up and dumps this key on me. I'm not real
interested in the thing, but I ask because she's Moire, right? I mean,
what am I supposed to do with the thing? She says she's confident that
whatever I do will be discreet and glides off all regal like. She can do
that. So can Mom. I guess Dad's blood screwed me up, because I also
bounce off walls and stuff when I try that. So anyway, I figure she's
maybe hinting at something, so I move off to a secluded part of the castle
for intensive negotiations with Annie. It's not until later that I
connect the key with anything else. I was feeling good about life and
delicate relations and just kind of wandering around. I wind up where I
always do. The Pattern Room. I'm about to move on, as I always do, when
it hits me. That key that Auntie Queen gave me usually rests on her
gorgeous green cleavage. It's the key to the Pattern Room, right? So I
figure, an opportunity like this may never come again, right? I mean,
sometimes it seems like Mom'll never allow me to surface, even. So I
think to myself that it might be nice to see what I'm missing. That was
all right, so I thought I'd get a closer look. At the starting point.
I'd like to blame what happened next on the currents, but I think Mom'll
smack me if I try that one again. Anyway, I never thought there'd be any
way to tell that someone's walked the thing. Or that one side effect was
suddenly appearing before Moire at court. Fortunately, I excused the
incident with my usual panache, returned the key, and reported directly to
my room to wait and see if that's where Mom'd stick me anyway when word
got around to her. See, nothing gets past Mom. Oh, you might think
you're slick, but she's got more information on you before you even do
anything to radiate it. So that was bad enough, right? But today. Oh,
man. "Gee, Aunt Moire, Llewella sure is mad that I walked the Pattern."
"Don't worry, Bartholomew. Here, take this important document to Amber."
She's never going to believe this one. And I really don't like that "new
toy" look in Fiona's eye. Mom warned me about her. Right up there with
don't walk the Pattern and don't go to Amber. Yep. I'm dead for sure.
