Entry 15:17
Been a busy day; since I have time until breakfast, I'll write this,
eat, and then sleep. Let's see. Don't know about Brand anymore.
Everyone warned me about him, but his little gift book contains some
handwritten pages concerning some real power. Summoning and binding
demons. Now we're talking. Wondered why he had sent such a worthless
book. For a while, thought he might've been trying to be insulting.
Power of persuasion indeed, like I hadn't already mastered that. Anyway,
now it makes sense. Demonology, I think now that's power, something
useful. If it's real, and not a trick.
Only had time to skim it this morning (actually, yesterday morning) as
an invitation to formal dinner arrived and had to find proper attire. Had
to spend all afternoon. The servant assigned to help must have thought I
was crazy. Great, now all the servants will think so, as I'm sure he'll
gossip about "the new lord" or something. Hopefully, convinced him I was
from hicksville, and that's why I had no decent clothes and didn't know
the proper customs.
Arrived at the dinner late, have no idea if that was fashionable or
not. The newfound contents of the book were distracting me from paying
close attention to what was going on. There were several announcements
afterwards, which were probably the whole reason for the formalities.
Which means I spent all afternoon getting ready for a few announcements.
Suspect I'll have to get used to it in a monarchy. And at least it was
fairly important. Nick is to be crowned, or coronated, in just two weeks,
with a grand ball to celebrate. Another ball in only one week will
occasion the recognition of several others as members of the royal family.
Suppose Nick wants a big powerful family to swear fealty to him. Not to
mention those he'll gain through the marriage of the announced three
engagements.
Big question is, am I on that list of recognitions? Doubt it. After
all, nobody's approached me about it, and Quin hasn't done anything that
might be construed as recognizing me, official or not. That's probably
for the best, though, I'm not ready yet to swear any binding oaths of
obeisance. Skeptical of the whole idea of fealty and certainly haven't
been here long enough to know if I'd want to swear to Nick or Amber
specifically. What if Quin's not my father, and I'm therefore not an
Amberite? What if Ari's scan was wrong? Think the best course is to just
wait a while before doing anything precipitous.
Spent the rest of the night reading the book, not sleeping, quietly.
Except for some alarm for the guards at about eleven o'clock. Would have
investigated, but the book seemed more interesting. Things like the
different kinds of demons (house, pit, elemental, abyssal). Recipes for
summoning, binding and banishing. Specific names of demons, which are
necessary. Explanations of tasks with which to bind them. Even a chapter
on defenses against demons. Plan to study it very carefully first, then
find out if it's real or not.
