Entry 15:22 Next day
Well, very busy day. First, searching for the missing book wasn't
necessary. It's back. All by itself. Very suspicious. However, since
it was back, felt I could go about my final preparations for the Grand
Ball. Interesting way to party. Everyone's on best behavior. Or so
you'd think. Actually, there were quite a few silly shenanigans at the
dinner table tonight. Didn't know what exactly started it all, but things
degenerated quickly. Did manage to pick up some interesting tidbits and
something else that might come in very handy some day.
First, my tailor is incompetent. The fancy, dimensionally appropriate
clothes I had ordered for the ball didn't fit right. Have to talk to him
about that. When I go for the clothes for next week's ball. Think I'll
insist they be ready a few days in advance so any needed alterations can
be accomplished in time. 'Course, what's the bother, doesn't look like
I'll become a legitimate part of this family any time soon. Quin did not
show up at the ball. Actually, Avalon was rather underrepresented. Won't
matter how good I look, if I remain unrecognized, just be some odd
hanger-on. Why doesn't he? Really like to know why.
Alexandra has issues, women's issues. All quite reasonable, but
sounds like she wants to fix the world. Is realistic enough not to jump
in willy-nilly, but it might be interesting to watch what she campaigns
for in the future. Don't think this feudal society is ready for it quite
yet, even if the royal family is. Nod and smile.
The Avatar of Faerie is named "Jack." He was at the ball. Not
sure if he was invited or not, but he spent at least some of the time
skulking about invisible to the ordinary eye. He has a very strong
presence about him, though, that I could sense irregardless of what he was
doing. Most of the others did not seem to be able to track him so.
Suspect he had something to do with the shenanigans at the table, and/or
possibly whatever happened between Ari and Ish, whatever that was
about.
One of my dances managed to dance with Ari. She still distrusts
Angel. She found it as odd as I did that Ronan, head of security, if you
will, was missing. As well as Vix. Ari seemed to have decided to nose
around to see what was up. Make sure everything's on the up and up.
Anyway, while we were dancing, Ari's mom, Mirelle, was showing off her
conjuration skills to Whimsy. She had conjured a working acetylene torch.
In Amber. Have to check my earlier calculations, but that shouldn't be
here. Acetylene can be used explosively. If I can figure out what about
her acetylene makes it actually work here, may be able to make some sort
of explosive for ammunition for my guns. Or if not, convert Mirelle's
acetylene into an explosive that I can use in a few rounds. At the very
least, should be able to use the acetylene as a propellant for a rocket.
Get it going fast enough, and it won't matter if nothing goes boom, the
energy of impact should be good enough. Fortunately, someone realized an
acetylene torch can't just be left lying around at a public ball, so they
turned it invisible. And promptly forgot about it. Invisibility wasn't a
problem for me, so snagged it and brought it up to my room for later
study. Like after I figure out what to do about the book.
The book. The book actually occupied most of my thoughts today.
Reappearance just screams something odd. Kept an eye on it all day, but
it didn't do anything interesting. It didn't do anything. Except
reappear. Most interesting part, though, was what it was. Warm. Books,
no matter how mysterious, should not remain at approximately 98.6° all
day long. Just doesn't happen. Just checked it out and discovered, as
expected, that it has a psychic presence. Now have a living book. Demon?
Likely. No, probable. At least I know where it is. Just have to figure
out what to do with it. Sleep tonight, after all that dancing, and decide
tomorrow. Doesn't appear to be going anywhere, or have any malice for me
or Angel. What could go wrong? Disappear again. That would actually be
kinda funny.
