Ariana's log,
Chapter 124
"You know, when I think of Whimsy, I don't think fun-seeking party
girl."
Sunday, September 3, 2994
Whimsy sends Ariana flowers with a note that says she's glad she
didn't set Ariana on fire. Ariana is too. Ariana stops by to see Whimsy
at one point and notices that she has painted three portraits: One of
Jack, one of Shard, and one of a Jesby that Ariana assumes is Edwin. The
first two are idealized versions, with Jack looking kind and Shard looking
human. Edwin is not idealized.
Ariana continues working on the hospital, starting renovations to
the building, stocking up on medical supplies, hiring new people and
training the ones she has, etc. She makes another trip into Shadow with
Felix to get more supplies to sell and use. Felix mentions Caitt's skill
with herbs. Ariana suggests recruiting her. Felix gets Caitt to teach a
weekly class.
Lucien begins teaching Ariana how to selectively erase parts of
her memory. Progress is slow, since it's a delicate operation and he's
being *very* careful about teaching her. He estimates it will be a few
months before she's learned enough to safely try it on her own.
Ariana continues working out in the afternoon. Felix brings his
sons to the practice room and attempts to teach them wrestling. They
spend a lot of time picking on each other in the usual sibling fashion.
Nicholas begins making his presence known in Amber, having
supplies brought in to help the city, etc.
Monday, September 4, 2994
Eric returns to Amber and spends half of the day sequestered in
Nicholas' office.
Tamaryn leaves her boys with Felix while she goes dress shopping
with Ariana and Whimsy. Tamaryn says she's mad at Felix for teaching the
boys to spit. Ariana suggests leaving Ana and Briana with Felix as well.
Tamaryn loves the idea. Felix is less than thrilled.
Since children are allowed at the coronation and ball, Ariana asks
her children if they want to go. All of them do. Ariana arranges for the
children's clothing to be made by the castle tailor.
Ariana talks with Shard in the evening, mostly to see how he's
doing. He says he's fine, pointing out that he has very few emotional
states. They chat for a bit.
Tuesday, September 5, 2994
Ariana draws a Trump sketch of her father, based on the memories
of him she got from Mirelle's mind. She is able to draw the sketch, but
it does not work and remains warm, which could be due to the Chasm
blocking Trump to Chaos, him not being in that form, or something else.
Ariana plans to see if it's cold after the Chasm mends.
Wednesday, September 6, 2994
Ariana dresses to the nines for the ball, which unfortunately
means wearing a corset again, and goes down to the Great Hall with her
family. Representatives from Middlecourt, the Golden Circle and the Rose
Kingdom are present. Absent are Brand, Rinaldo, and any representatives
from Avalon. A lot of Eric's special guard are there, although very few
people know that's who they are. Gavin and Felix notice them, however.
Eric is still wearing the Regent's sigil. Shard and Whimsy arrive
together. Grayson is there with an escort from the Pearl, a blond named
Roxanne. Ariana recognizes her and waves. When Roxanne waves back,
Grayson look nervous.
Ishmael enters the Great Hall with Laughter, which causes a lot of
attention, given that she's not with either of her husbands. Driscoll and
Foster are standing together, but Driscoll notices Laughter and her escort
first and begins stalking towards them. Felix intercepts him briefly and
reminds him where they are. When has that ever stopped the family? Felix
steps out of his way. Ariana and Felix go over to Foster, who hasn't
noticed Laughter and Ishmael yet. They try to distract him. Driscoll and
Ishmael speak, and Driscoll seems to be calming down. Shard approaches
the two of them, puts a hand on Ishmael's shoulder, and asks if there's a
problem. Ishmael brushes Shard's hand off and says there isn't. Ariana
can tell that he's uncomfortable, but isn't sure why. Driscoll and Shard
move off and talk briefly. Foster watches Laughter and Ishmael while
talking to Ariana and Felix. Ariana offers to introduce him to Ishmael.
Laughter takes off to get punch when she sees them coming. Ariana
performs introductions. Ishmael assures Foster that everything's on the
up and up. He and Laughter were just training together. Foster believes
him. Ishmael mentions Driscoll's reaction. Foster says that he and
Laughter losing their memories has been hard on Driscoll. Driscoll broods
in a corner, occasionally glaring daggers at Ishmael. Ariana leaves
Ishmael, Foster and Felix talking and approaches Driscoll. She asks if he
wants to talk about it. No. All right, but he should know that she
doubts Ishmael did anything untoward. He's an asshole, but not that kind
of asshole. Driscoll nods.
Ariana notices Donal and Briana starting to spat. Then Briana
grows claws and Donal wisely goes away. Lucien has a talk with Briana,
then sends the children over to their mother, while he talks to some
Middlecourt nobles. Whimsy says hello to Vincent. They've apparently
been taking Trump lessons from Fiona together. Ariana says hello to
Shard, then she and Whimsy make small talk while Ariana keeps an eye on
her kids.
The coronation ceremony begins. Bartholomew enters the room,
followed by about 15 or 20 priests and priestesses of the Unicorn. The
coronation is a religious ceremony, so it drags on for quite a while,
causing Whimsy to make a snide remark to Shard. Once the crown is placed
on Nicholas' head, the Unicorn appears, to the oohing and ahing of the
nobles. Everyone bows, the Unicorn fades, and Nicholas is officially
proclaimed King Nicholas I.
Everyone goes upstairs to the dining hall for the feast. Ishmael
throws a pea at Whimsy and then another one Ariana, and generally makes an
ass of himself. Ariana tells her sons that this is why Ishmael isn't
teaching them anymore. Not that this makes any impression on them. The
boys are obviously communicating with Ishmael at various points during the
meal, and laugh occasionally. Ariana glares at Ishmael.
Everyone moves back to the Great Hall for the ball. Ishmael
begins dancing the first dance with Laughter with his eyes closed, but
stops after a short while and goes over to Shard, who is dancing with
Whimsy. The two of them speak briefly and then leave the room. When they
return, Laughter is talking tactics with members of House Arion. Ishmael
joins her. Foster and Driscoll leave. Ishmael leaves a short time later.
The children are finally sent to bed, freeing their parents to dance and
mingle. Lucien, Shard, Bleys, Julian and Benedict are all good dancers.
Ariana manages to get in a few dances with Lucien before he begins
schmoozing with the Middlecourt representatives.
During the third dance, Ariana hears Grayson laugh, which he
shouldn't be able to do if he's still under Jack's curse. She glares at
Whimsy. Whimsy approaches Ariana and admits that Grayson did walk the
Pattern, but they were trying to keep it a secret. Ariana says Whimsy
shouldn't have let Grayson get drunk, then. Yes, well she thought he'd be
more responsible. Oops. Whimsy leaves the ball.
Since his date has now retired, and her husband is busy
networking, Ariana asks Shard to dance. He holds her rather closely while
they waltz, and she feels rather strange, as if reality is somewhat
altered. It's a very pleasant sensation. She asks if he's been toying
with Ishmael. Doesn't a cat always play with a mouse? She says that's
terribly mean of him. He responds that one does what one can to keep
entertained. Ariana dances with Shard as often as she can without drawing
undo attention. She also dances with Bleys, Caine, Random, Merlin and
Martin. Caine likes twirly dances, and keeps his hand rather low on her
back. Lucien pries himself away occasionally to dance with her, as well.
The evening ends uneventfully.
Thursday, September 7, 2994
Ariana gets a note from Ishmael before breakfast, thanking her for
taking her petty argument to Shard, which got him bitten. Ariana destroys
the note and is rather quiet at breakfast. On her way back to her
quarters, she hears Grayson scream and runs for his quarters. She finds
the door broken in, then hears Whimsy yelling, "Rise and shine!" Ariana
enters the bedroom just as Whimsy tells a hung over Grayson that their
lessons are discontinued until he uninvites Jack. Then she leaves.
Ariana conjures Grayson a hangover remedy and says it will help the
headache. Then she goes down to the practice room and beats on things for
a while. She spends the rest of the morning working on the hospital.
Ariana observes Alexandra watching Lucien at lunch. Grayson looks
upset and leaves shortly after the meal begins. Fearing that he may be
doing something rash, Ariana leaves and tries to Trump him, but he blocks
her. She tries to find him, but he's not in his quarters, nor do any of
the servants know where he is. Ariana Trumps him again and is blocked
again. She returns to lunch, explains the situation to Lucien, and asks
if he can find Grayson. She says that she's afraid Grayson is going to do
something stupid and she'll worry until she knows where he is. Lucien
sighs and leaves the room. Alexandra follows him. Ariana asks Tamaryn to
watch her kids and follows Alexandra undetected. Lucien realizes that
he's being followed by Alexandra, however, and stops. The following
dialogue ensues:
"You know, about this morning, I decided it's no big deal,
really." -- Alexandra
"So, it's no longer important to you?" -- Lucien
"No, there are other things I can learn. So, it's no big deal.
So, you don't need to ask." -- Alexandra
"You should have told me that before." -- Lucien
Alexandra then leaves in a huff.
Ariana goes to her quarters. Lucien joins her shortly and tells
her that Grayson is in the one place in Amber that he doesn't want to go.
The Pattern room? Yep. Ariana casts Earth Passage and drops through the
floor to the Pattern room. Grayson is walking the Pattern. She asks him
to wait when he reaches the center. He doesn't. She Trumps him. After a
few moments, he takes the call and comes through. She asks him what
happened. He uninvited Jack, but then someone else reinvited him. Who?
He gives her a psychic image of the woman. Ariana recognizes her as
Alexandra. Ariana Trumps Nicholas and asks to come through, saying it's
urgent. He pulls them through. Ariana and Grayson tell him what
happened. He tries to Trump Alexandra, then says she must be in Faerie,
since he can't reach her. He pulls out Fiona's Trump, thanks Ariana and
Grayson for notifying him so quickly, and dismisses them.
Once they are in the hall, Grayson Trumps Whimsy and tells her
that he uninvited Jack. Ariana suggests telling Whimsy the rest, but not
over Trump. Grayson pulls Whimsy through and fills her in on Alexandra's
involvement. Whimsy turns red with anger and asks if anyone's told Fiona.
Ariana explains that Nicholas is engaged in that unenviable task. Whimsy
storms off.
Ariana asks if Grayson had the Pattern take him to Jack. Yes.
That was very dangerous. Yes, but it worked. Ariana says he was lucky
and asks him to get help the next time he tries something like that. OK.
He asks if the lecture is over. Yes. He's going to booby-trap Whimsy's
quarters now, in revenge for her making him suffer this morning. Ariana
points out that pissing off his instructor again might be a bad idea.
Plus, Whimsy's responses can be lethal. That's OK, Mom will teach him,
won't she? She jokes about being his second choice. He asks what
Whimsy's other name is. Why? He needs to know what kind of flowers to
leave her. Ariana suggests he leave dahlias. She then mentions his
recent Pattern walk and warns him of the effect the Pattern has on
fertility. Grayson turns rather pale at the news and departs.
Ariana returns to her quarters, but there's no sign of Lucien.
She Trumps him, but gets no answer. She finds Tamaryn and thanks her for
watching the kids. Tamaryn says she should thank Felix for watching
Briana. She does. Felix mentions that Briana seemed fascinated by the
lint on his shirt. That's normal for a small child. And by why he has
facial hair and her father doesn't. Also normal. Felix thinks Briana's
going to grow a beard. Ariana says she's not that good a shapeshifter
yet, but maybe she will later on. Given that Iseult turned into a boy for
six months, Ariana figures a beard wouldn't be nearly as bad. Felix isn't
so sure. Ariana says she'll keep an eye open to see if Briana needs to
shave. Tamaryn giggles. Ariana asks if Tamaryn's seen Lucien. No.
Ariana tries to locate him with her serpent ring, but can't, which means
he's either in Chaos or in the 'Tween.
Ariana Trumps Ishmael during the afternoon. She got his note and
thinks they need to talk. Should she come to him? He'd prefer it. He's
in Foil. She recites some poetry in Greek to get by the barrier before he
pulls her through. She tells him she didn't send Shard after him. He
knows. Then why did he say she did in his note? It got her attention.
He tells her what Shard did to him. She knows. How? He had a mark on
his neck. He asks her how Shard found out about their fight. She
explains that she commiserated with Shard that night. He reveals that he
told Nicholas about what happened. Ariana admits that's why she didn't
tell him he'd been bitten when she first realized what had happened. She
was afraid he'd go to Nicholas, and she knew one bite wouldn't hurt him.
She also talked to Shard about it, and she's convinced he won't do it
again. Nicholas isn't so sure. Given that the effects will fade in a
month or so, Ishmael isn't holding it against her. Ariana mentions that
walking the Pattern will get rid of the effects as well, something she
figures he'll be doing soon. Ishmael says he isn't going to walk the
Pattern. This surprises Ariana. They discuss what will happen in Amber
when Eric makes his move on the throne. Ariana doesn't understand why
Nicholas is leaving Eric in charge instead of someone like Gérard.
Ishmael thinks Eric would kill Gérard for the throne. Ariana
thinks leaving Eric as Regent makes it too easy for him to take over.
Ishmael warns that having everyone in the castle makes it easy for Eric to
track them. Ariana says she was already planning to move back into town,
anyway. They finally get around to discussing the source of their
original argument, namely how he used her children. She explains that
Whimsy had already talked to her, and he should have given her time to
make up her mind. She asks that in the future he leave her children out
of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Does he understand why she didn't want him
teaching her children? He points out that he was good and left Amber.
She appreciates that. She agrees to let him resume his lessons with her
boys again.
Ariana tries to find Shard that evening, but he's not at his post
and he doesn't answer her Trump calls. She asks the junior officer who
replaced Shard if Shard took a leave of absence. He isn't sure, but he
does know that Shard has been relieved of duty. Does he know by who, or
for what reason? He claims he doesn't, but Ariana senses that he's
probably not telling the truth in his answer to her first question. She
asks who might be able to tell her where the order originated. He sends
her to the Colonel, who informs her, not unkindly, that it is a military
matter, and since she is not an active military member, she's not really
entitled to the information. He does assure her that Shard's existence is
in no danger, so long as he behaves. Ariana assumes from this that
Nicholas has banished Shard from Amber until he can be sure that the
incident with Ishmael won't be repeated.
Friday, September 8, 2994
Ariana begins the task of moving her family from the castle to her
townhouse. Whimsy stops by during the afternoon and tells Ariana that
Alexandra married Jack and is pregnant with his child. Fiona's taken her
off to deprogram her. Whimsy is obviously not very happy about the whole
affair, and Ariana isn't too thrilled, either. She wonders if Jack will
steal Alexandra's baby the way he did hers.
Flora gives birth to a baby girl she names Lillian.
Saturday, September 9, 2994
Ariana hires a math tutor for the children. Her name is Madeleine
Dunstan, Maddy for short, a tall, redheaded country girl who put herself
through University in Begma using the meager inheritance her father left
her when he died. She loves teaching and actually manages to get the boys
interested in their studies with many unusual projects, such as using
geometry and trig in the construction of toy models. Ariana likes her and
makes an effort to befriend her, especially once she learns that she has
no surviving family. The two quickly become friends, and Ariana finds
that Maddy has a wonderful sense of humor and a somewhat bookish
nature.
Sunday, September 10, 2994
Driscoll returns to Amber. Ariana lets him know that she's there if
he needs someone to talk to, the way he was there for her. He seems to
appreciate knowing she's there, but spends most of his time either alone
or with Foster.
Tuesday, September 12, 2994
Ariana tries to visit Ygg, but is informed that no access is allowed.
Benedict is too busy preparing for the upcoming invasion to discuss the
matter, and Fiona is not in Amber. Ariana tries activating her Trump of
Ygg, but it begins to smoke so she desists. Ariana offers Benedict her
services if there's anything she can do to help the army prepare for the
attack on Chaos. Benedict thanks her for the offer, but says it isn't
necessary.
Wednesday, September 13, 2994
Ariana talks with Lucien about whether they should wait until after
the war in Chaos before trying to have another baby. He thinks that would
be best, just in case.
Thursday, September 14, 2994
Ariana continues teaching Jalana how to use a staff, but Jalana
decides she doesn't like this kind of weapon, either. In fact, she
doesn't like the idea of violence in any form. Lucien figures it's
teenage rebellion and suggests leaving her alone for now, pointing out
that she won't really learn unless she's interested in it anyway.
Friday, September 15, 2994
Ariana confides to Maddy that she would like to build a library for
the city one day. Maddy warns she might be stepping on the Feldane's
toes, since they have a large library already. True, but it's not open to
commoners. Maddy points out that most people can't read. Ariana knows
that, but she intends to teach those who are interested in learning.
Maddy says that could be dangerous, since a populace that can read is more
inclined to revolt. Ariana dislikes the idea of deliberately keeping
people ignorant so they're easier to control. She admits that she's not
likely to have time for it for several years, though, so it's a worry for
the future.
Saturday, September 16, 2994
After a few harsh conjuration lessons with Whimsy, Grayson asks Ariana
to take over his instruction. He comments that Whimsy is broken. Ariana
enjoys the excuse the lessons give her to spend time with Grayson without
smothering him as his mother. He seems to be recovering from his years in
Chaos quickly, enjoying his new life down to the finest detail. There is
an unsuppressible goofiness about him, and he has the most horrendous
laugh. Seeing him happy does Ariana a world of good.
Sunday, September 17, 2994
Ariana introduces Maddy to Ishmael, in the hopes of them hitting it
off together, but there are no obvious sparks.
Monday, September 18, 2994
Whimsy takes over Vincent's Trump lessons in Fiona's absence. Ariana
asks to speak to Whimsy one day when she's returning Vincent. Whimsy says
she has to do some gardening, but Ariana is welcome to accompany her.
Ariana follows Whimsy to her quarters, where she finds that the parlor has
been turned into a veritable greenhouse, full of flowering plants. Whimsy
says she conjured them and made them permanent, creating them in such a
way that even the plants which wouldn't normally survive Amber's climate
are able to withstand it. After some polite conversation, Ariana admits
that she's there because she's worried about Whimsy. Whimsy says Ariana
has enough burdens without shouldering hers. Ariana thinks cutting
herself off the way Whimsy has been isn't healthy in the long run. Whimsy
claims that she's distant because she recognizes that her state of mind is
not conducive to positive interactions with others. Ariana disagrees, but
is unable to convince Whimsy otherwise. Whimsy insists she has more
pressing concerns anyway, like keeping Eric off of the throne. Ariana
offers her help, if Whimsy needs it. Whimsy asks why she's going out of
her way to risk her family's stability. Ariana points out that if Eric
takes the throne, there will be war, which will affect her family's
stability regardless of what she does. Whimsy concedes her point and asks
Ariana to be available if she Trumps her. Ariana says she will.
Wednesday, September 20, 2994
Lucien spends most of his time going back and forth to Middlecourt.
Ariana asks what he's doing there, but he refuses to bore her with
politics. After some pressing, he does admit that part of it has to do
with what he's planning to do if Nicholas is successful in taking out
Zane. He's mostly taking a wait and see attitude, for now, since there
are too many variables. Is he planning on moving back to Chaos and taking
over House Vetch? He doesn't know. Ariana is obviously disturbed by this
idea, and asks him to talk to her before he makes any final decisions. Of
course.
Saturday, September 23, 2994
Shard returns to Amber but flees from Ariana and continues to refuse
her Trump calls. She sends him a note asking why he's avoiding her.
Sunday, September 24, 2994
Ariana receives a reply to her note from Shard, telling her to talk to
Nicholas. She arranges a meeting and asks what's going on. Nicholas
explains that she has too much influence over Shard, so Shard was told to
stay away from her and get over her. Or he can die. Ariana is horribly
upset by this, but can't change Nicholas' mind. She leaves another note
for Shard, apologizing for causing him so much trouble, then goes off by
herself and spends the better part of the day crying. She returns for
dinner, using a glamour to hide her appearance, and manages to fool her
kids into thinking she's fine. Lucien isn't fooled, of course, but makes
no comment until the kids have gone to bed. They study each other for a
bit, then Lucien pats the couch next to him. Ariana sits down, hugs him,
and cries silently for a bit. Then she stops and says she's made a
complete mess of things this time. He begs to differ, telling her that
Shard is to blame. She asks how he knows what Shard did. He tells her
he's decided to track the reasons behind her moods, so he has evidence to
the contrary when she claims something is all her fault. All right, so
why isn't the current mess her fault? Because she can no more control
Shard than she can control Fiona. Does he think it would have happened
eventually, anyway? Yes. That seems to help, and her feelings of guilt
diminish, although the sadness remains. Lucien manages to cheer her up
after a couple of days. She mostly deals with it by not thinking about it
as much as possible.
Wednesday, September 27, 2994
Ishmael's workouts become harder, as he prepares for Chaos. He
informs Ariana that he'll have to reduce their training time together to
every couple of days. His training regime for Chaos, plus tutoring her
boys, isn't leaving him with enough free time to train with her daily.
Friday, September 29, 2994
The basement for Ariana's summer house is finished and the foundation
is laid. Ariana has the site covered up until spring.
Wednesday, October 4, 2994
Ariana points out to Grayson at one of his lessons that the employees
of the Pearl that he's been using as escorts are known by a significant
number of the nobles. Not that she disapproves, she just wants to make
sure he doesn't think he's being discrete when he isn't. Grayson has a
good laugh over it. He rarely talks with her about anything outside of
conjuration, not even to ask about his siblings. Ariana is disappointed
but doesn't push him. She discovers that he is a half-assed student, but
annoyingly competent. There are times when Ariana is positive that he
hasn't give the lesson a second thought since the previous day, but he's
still able to pull it off. He has a lot of natural talent, but it's more
due to the fact that he's a consummate bullshitter. He occasionally
reminds her of Brand, in that when he chooses to focus on something, his
intensity can be quite unnerving, and he's capable of picking things up
almost instantly. He's rarely that highly motivated, though, much to
Ariana's relief.
Thursday, October 12, 2994
Ariana asks Lucien to teach her the spell he used to determine that
she has Loryn's soul. Much to her surprise, he says he didn't cast it.
Then why did he claim that he cast it on her one night while she was
sleeping? Well, he brought in the person who did cast it, a faerie friend
of his. Ariana isn't pleased that he mislead her, nor that he brought a
stranger into the bedroom while she was sleeping, but Vetch manages to
distract her.
Thursday, October 26, 2994
Ariana's Trump lessons with Ishmael finally allow her to move beyond
sketches to drawing full-fledged Trump cards. Ishmael tells her she now
knows all he ever managed to learn from Fiona, so if she wants more
advanced training, she'll have to find another instructor.
Wednesday, November 1, 2994
Ariana continues learning how to selectively erase her memory from
Lucien, spending at least two hours a day working on it, usually after the
children have gone to bed. Lucien is a devoted teacher and is being
extremely careful about the whole process. By the beginning of November,
she has learned enough that he is satisfied she can safely do it on her
own.
Saturday, November 4, 2994
Ariana turns 71. Ishmael and Maddy surprise her with the news that
they got married the previous day, so she'll have to find new tutors for
her kids. Ariana is happy for them, but hurt that she wasn't invited to
the wedding. Ishmael says that they didn't invite anyone, it was just the
two of them and the Priest of the Unicorn. She's the first person they've
told, actually, which makes her feel somewhat better. She gives Maddy a
set of her chemistry text books as a wedding present. That evening,
Lucien celebrates her birthday by sending the kids to Tamaryn's for the
night, taking her out to dinner, and spending the rest of the night making
love to her.
Tuesday, November 7, 2994
After two months of working on the hospital building, hiring and
training employees, etc., the hospital renovation is at the
everything's-torn-down-and-lying-in-piles stage. The most difficult task
is still training the staff, and it will be months before things are up
and running efficiently. Ariana's goal is to make it at least capable of
operating as an emergency infirmary by the time the war in Chaos is
over.
As for the rest of the family during the two month period, Ronan
remains missing, with Iseult and Eric still searching for him. Benedict
continues to train with his army. Bleys and Viktoria tour the Golden
Circle. Meander does the same, raising support for Nicholas. Fiona and
Alexandra remain absent from Amber. Caine and Eric show up in Amber only
sporadically, with Eric spending a lot of time in town and with the
nobles. Gérard works with the navy throughout the Golden Circle.
Julian keeps mostly to Arden and keeps supply lines open. Llewella keeps
to Rebma. Random is busy as Steward and in the city with the nobles.
Mirelle and Devlin play in the castle. Foster gets his memory back at the
beginning of November. Laughter trains her forces in Foil. Haris works
with the armies. Iseult is gone for most of the two months, returning
shortly before the army leaves. Nicholas spends the time preparing for
war. He warns the family that the Chasm will mend on November 8, and his
armies will depart shortly thereafter.
