Ariana's log, Chapter 131
"If I have to fuck another faerie... Man, I'm telling you, my wife is
going to kill me."
Tuesday, November 15, 4
Ariana spends the rest of the afternoon teaching her classes at the
University. Ishmael never gets back to her.
Wednesday, November 16, 4
Ariana gets a Trump call from Ishmael. She asks if now is a better
time. Not exactly. One of Alexandra's children is missing. Which one?
Arawn, the faerie child. Ariana comes through and asks Alexandra if Jack
might have taken the boy. Alexandra isn't sure. Ariana suggests that she
contact Jack. Suddenly, Jack appears and bows. Ariana clenches her hand
on her sword and ignores him. Ishmael walks out of the room and Trumps
someone. Ishmael's side of the conversation proceeds as follows:
"Fucker!"
"Oh my God, you told her!"
"You ratted me out! She's going to have my nuts in a
slingshot!"
"This is Whimsy, remember? You just poked her with a sharp
stick."
"Any pointers since I'm going to Faerie land again? Other than
keep my dick in my pants?"
After this, Ishmael quiets his voice and nothing more is heard.
Ishmael reenters the room a short time later. Jack tells Ishmael to let
him know if he wants any help dealing with Whimsy.
Ariana Trumps home, gets some food and her armor, and tells Lucien
where she's going. Again? She explains that it's Alexandra's kid who's
gone missing this time, and notes the irony of being asked to find the
child of the man who stole hers. Lucien says she can comfort herself with
taking the moral high ground. She observes that it doesn't feel all that
comforting.
Ariana Trumps Ishmael and rejoins the group. Jack says he'll check
things out from a distance, to reduce the animosity level. Ariana says
that won't help. Jack drops through the floor. Alexandra takes Ariana
and Ishmael into the 'Tween, following Arawn's trail. They arrive on the
border between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Alexandra fills a bowl
with water and scries for Arawn. She sees him being led by an Unseelie
faerie into the lands of the Unseelie Court. Ariana tells everyone to
hold their breath, and casts Earth Passage to transport the group ahead of
the faerie. Ishmael, never having seen this spell before, is caught
off-guard, and they have to surface briefly so he can get some air. They
finally surface a short distance ahead of Arawn and the faerie, and
conceal themselves behind some trees. As the pair approaches, Alexandra
suddenly jumps out in front of them. The faerie responds by dropping into
the ground with Arawn. Before the faerie sinks completely out of sight,
Ishmael grabs him, Ariana grabs Ishmael, and they sink into the ground
with the faerie. Ariana casts Earth Passage again, in case they lose
contact with the faerie. The faerie abruptly releases Arawn and flees.
Ariana brings Ishmael and Arawn back to the surface. As they are looking
around for Alexandra, Ariana gets hit by a massive dispel that doesn't
fade, leaving her unable to cast any spells. Ishmael picks up Arawn and
he and Ariana run for the border with the Seelie Court. Unfortunately,
there is now a magical barrier at the border, which they discover when
they slam into it. Some investigation reveals that the barrier has
Pattern in it. Ariana tries one of her cold iron daggers on it, and get
knocked unconscious. She wakes up to find her dagger embedded in a
tree.
Alexandra arrives on the scene accompanied by a large group of
faeries, including one who appears to be the Unseelie King. Alexandra
explains that they've all been offered the 'hospitality' of the Unseelie
Court. In other words, they're all prisoners. The group approaches the
Unseelie King and his entourage. Alexandra and Ariana curtsy. The King
asks Alexandra to introduce her companions. Ariana observes that he must
already know her name, since he would have needed it for the spell he cast
on her. The King smiles. Alexandra makes introductions. The King
removes his helm, and Ariana recognizes him as Finndo. Since he now has
long, pointed ears, she assumes he took the Faerie Ring at some point. He
looks them all over and figures they'll make a nice trade.
The Amberites are taken to Finndo's castle and relieved of all of
their weapons and magical items, despite their best efforts to conceal
them. Then they are forced to sit through a celebratory feast with
Finndo's nobles and his Queen, Nicnivin. They are offered food, but don't
eat or drink anything, lest they be trapped in Faerie forever. After
dinner, everyone is shown to separate, private rooms, which are locked
from the outside. Ariana tries to shift out using the Pattern, but
doesn't have enough room. She decides to conserve her strength and get
some sleep. Ishmael passes the night by singing loudly, hoping to annoy
his captors. They appear more amused than annoyed however, and some of
them even join him.
Thursday, November 17, 4
Shortly after dawn, Ariana gets a visit from Lucien in his faerie
form. They exchange lopsided smiles. Ariana asks what Finndo wants in
exchange for them. Nicholas' Faerie Ward. Otherwise, Finndo will keep
them hostage until they die of dehydration, or drink and become trapped in
Faerie. Ariana observes that Nicholas can't surrender his Faerie Ward,
and asks if Lucien is trapped as well. No, he agreed to behave himself.
Ariana points out that she was behaving herself, and that didn't help her.
Lucien teases that he doesn't have hostage written on his forehead the
way she does. In that case, she invites him to show her how to erase it.
He doesn't think that's possible. Can he make water for her? No, he
promised to behave himself, so giving her water would be frowned upon.
Ariana reiterates that the Ward cannot be given up. Lucien doesn't think
that Nicholas will. They gaze silently at each other for a few moments,
then Ariana hugs him and they just hold each other for a while.
Around mid-afternoon, the door opens and Ariana is told that she's
free to go. She leaves with Lucien, encountering Ishmael and Alexandra in
the hall. Arawn is noticeably absent, so Ariana asks Alexandra where he
is. Alexandra says she was released earlier and brought him home, then
returned to plead for Ariana and Ishmael's release.
Everyone returns to Amber. Ariana conjures herself some water, then
goes to the castle in search of Nicholas. She tries his office first, and
discovers that it's been trashed. She eventually finds Nicholas in his
quarters. Whimsy, Vincent and Ishmael are also there. Nicholas is rather
singed. Ariana offers to heal him, but he says he can handle it. He says
that the Goblin King has taken the Orb. Ariana reveals that the Goblin
King is Finndo. Nicholas remarks that at least he got his ass kicked by
someone good. Whimsy says that Benedict's gone after him. Ariana figures
that they were set up. Yep. Ishmael asks if Corbin is still at his
place. Nope, he's in the castle. Nicholas is going to leave him with
Tamaryn, since she's shown an ability to keep track of children. Whimsy
thinks Alexandra's children should be left with Tamaryn too, given
Alexandra's behavior. Ariana argues that Alexandra couldn't help the fact
that someone snatched her child. Nicholas tells everyone to discuss this
elsewhere. Everyone leaves.
Ariana gives Vincent a big hug before he takes off with Whimsy, then
goes home and hugs all of her children. She learns that Lucien explained
her absence by saying that she was visiting Faerie. After eating some
food, she goes down to the University's training area and works out her
frustration at being imprisoned, drawing quite a crowd in the process.
She returns home a few hours later, and spends the evening with her
family. Lucien gets the benefit of her remaining pent up energy that
night.
Friday, November 18, 4
Ariana receives a note from Whimsy, saying that it's good to have her
back. She also receives a message from Nicholas, saying that he will help
her make her sword Takaran, although he can only allow her to witness some
of the process. Ishmael misses their usual morning workout so Ariana
Trumps him, but he doesn't answer. Still somewhat shaken by how close she
came to dying, Ariana decides to cancel her classes and spend the day with
her family.
Ariana discusses the Finndo situation with Lucien. He thinks Finndo
will back off now that he has what he wants. The person he really wants
is dead, anyway. Ariana figures he's referring to Oberon. Yes. Lucien
says that Nicholas will have to rely on his own strength now. This
doesn't exactly break Ariana's heart. She asks what he thinks Finndo
would have done with them when it became obvious that Nicholas wasn't
going to surrender his Faerie Ward. Figured they weren't useful and gone
to plan B, which is pretty much what he did. So maybe she won't be such
an appealing hostage now? Nope. Why not? Her heart will always make her
susceptible. What does he think Benedict will do when he catches up with
Finndo? In all honesty, nothing. Oberon set Finndo and his brother up to
die, and Benedict may have been involved too. Ariana finds this
unsettling, given how much she respects Benedict. Lucien says that Oberon
wasn't the sort you said no to. All of his children feared him. Ariana
understands this, but even so, to kill your own brothers... He didn't say
Benedict killed them, he may only have helped arrange the events that led
to their death. And he may not have even known what would be the result.
That theory sits better with Ariana.
Saturday, November 19, 4
Ishmael misses another workout and his classes are still canceled, as
are Maddy's. Ariana goes to Ishmael's estate and asks to see him. His
servants claim he's still working on a project. What about Maddy? She's
ill. Physically? She just doesn't want to be disturbed. Ariana sends a
note up to Maddy, asking what she wants to do about the classes and
offering to either take them over, or find substitutes if she and Ishmael
won't be available for a while. Maddy responds that she won't be teaching
until Ishmael is done with his project, so all classes that are normally
held at their estates are canceled until that time.
Ariana returns home and sends Nicholas a note expressing her concern
about Ishmael. Since he is Ishmael's friend, she's hoping that maybe
Ishmael will listen if Nicholas tries to talk to him. Then she sets about
arranging for substitute teachers for Ishmael's classes at the
University.
