Ariana's log, Chapter 141
"I don't drug (Edwin) or myself this time. I'll be good."
Saturday, December 30, 5 - Saturday, March 24, 6
Ariana asks Lucien again about coming with him when Angelique wakes
up, but he still refuses to consider the idea. She asks why he's so
adamant about this. Because he doesn't think it will do either of them
any good to speak to each other. What if she gets out? She won't. Then
how can Anne-Marie leave? She doesn't want to. What if she changes her
mind? He'll keep in contact with her periodically. Is he planning to see
Angelique if she wakes up? Only if it's necessary. If it is, will he
tell her that he's going? Why? She wants to be prepared in case
something happens. He doesn't think she needs to be concerned, but agrees
to let her know if anything changes regarding Angelique's current
condition.
As time passes, Lucien begins to get involved in the training of the
house assassins again. This doesn't make Ariana real happy, although she
takes some small comfort from the fact that he hasn't returned to using
the old disciplinary methods.
Ariana discovers that being the Lady of House Vetch earns her both
respect and a healthy amount of fear. At most social functions, the
conversations tend to avoid any touchy political subjects when she's
around. On the plus side, this means that no one ever brings up the
subject of her father.
Ariana periodically visits Edwin, who seems to be focusing all of his
attention on Castor. So much so that Ariana begins to suspect that he may
have transferred the compulsion he had regarding Whimsy to the baby. He
appears to be an excellent father, and Castor is a lively, friendly baby.
Ariana and Edwin become friends during their visits, and she encourages
him to take a mistress, once he gets over the shock of Whimsy's abrupt
departure.
Ariana visits with Whimsy and Maddy frequently when she's in Amber.
Whimsy is focusing on her witchcraft. Pollux seems to be doing well,
although he's a rather quiet baby. Reese is growing quickly, and will
likely be rather tall.
Vincent becomes a somewhat sullen and withdrawn again after Whimsy
returns to Amber, although, as after she got married, this eventually
passes.
Sunday, March 25, 6
Three months pass. One morning, Trump just stops working. Ariana
mentions this to Lucien, who hadn't noticed. He's not particularly
worried. Ariana, naturally, is. She says she'll wait a few hours to see
if it's just temporary, but then she wants to find Vincent. Lucien
assigns someone to go with her. The man shows up a few hours later,
looking rather bored. Ariana begins shifting Shadow with Vincent in
mind.
Tuesday, March 27, 6
After a day or so of searching, Ariana is no closer to finding
Vincent. Which means he's either in a Shadow where both Trump and Pattern
don't work, or he's in Faerie. While she's pondering how to verify which
of these possibilities it might be, Trump starts working again. She
Trumps Vincent, and gets the sense that the contact's gone through, but
he's busy right now. She lets the contact drop, satisfied that he's
OK.
Wednesday, March 28, 6 - Wednesday, March 27, 7
Another year passes. Ariana finds it difficult to adjust to
Chaos...or Chaos has trouble adjusting to her. Lucien suggests that maybe
she should move to Amber. She's tempted, but doesn't feel she can as long
as he stays in Chaos. It would feel too much to her like she was
abandoning him. She does begin spending more time in Amber, however,
resuming teaching her various classes and taking a more active role in the
hospital again. Lucien encourages this since she seems to be happier
there.
Once Dorian is weaned, Ariana makes another attempt at enchanting
Alastor. Given what she ran into the last time she went into Shadow on
this task, Lucien insists on sending someone with her, and Ariana doesn't
object. As before, she shifts Shadow looking for a pool into which she
can dip Alastor to enchant it. And as before, she finds the Shadows
growing steadily more dark and creepy and she moves along. In the end,
she winds up having to fight her way through an undead army in order to
reach the pool. This manages to impress the Vetch who was sent to protect
her, and he's much more respectful to her on the return trip.
Ariana eventually figures out that most Chaosites are more comfortable
if she's businesslike and formal around them, as opposed to being open and
friendly. She thinks this is rather bizarre, but if that's what it
takes... Lucien finds this amusing. She asks why he didn't tell her this
was the solution a while ago. Because she wouldn't have had the feeling
of satisfaction of figuring it out herself.
Ariana continues to visit with Edwin, since unlike most of the people
Ariana knows in Chaos, she is able to act naturally around Edwin, and the
two become good friends.
Now that Alastor is functional again, Ariana turns Morglyph over to
Morgan on his next birthday.
Vincent finally gives up on Whimsy and begins courting Summer William,
much to Ariana's relief.
After much pressure from his mother, Alex marries Jasmine at the end
of the year. Ariana and Lucien attend, along with Morgan, Jalana, Ana and
Briana. Bryan and Dorian are left at home, being a bit young to sit
through the ceremony. The ceremony goes smoothly and nothing eventful
happens.
Thursday, March 28, 7 - Monday, April 25, 11
Four years pass. Ariana finds husbands for Abigail, Jolie, Nicole and
Winifred. Grayson has two more kids, but fortunately their families find
husbands for their mothers. Grayson shows no signs of outgrowing his
partying ways.
Leto gives Ariana a mastiff as a gift at one of the social events they
both attend in Chaos, doubtless because she knows Ariana is aware of their
heritage and hopes it will disturb her. Ariana is able to genetically
determine that it is indeed one of Ronan's grandsons. While it has some
intelligence, about a 60 IQ, it definitely isn't human. Its limited
intelligence makes it an excellent guard dog, however, so Ariana trains it
to guard the children.
Jalana gets over her desire to keep her virginity, and is often seen
in the company of any number of different men. Briana hits puberty and
leaves her tomboy phase behind. Much to Ariana's surprise, she becomes
rather feminine, having concluded that it's easier to manipulate people
than to exert yourself to get what you want. Ana continues to be rather
quiet and thoughtful. Bryan, like Devlin, is rather rambunctious and
tends to break things accidentally, but he has a good heart. Dorian turns
out to be rather gregarious.
Ariana begins spending summers with the children at her beach house in
Amber. Lucien is able to spend a few weeks there each summer as well, and
always gets away on the weekends.
Vincent gets engaged to Summer at the end of the third year and gets
married at the end of the fourth year.
Tuesday, April 26, 11
Ariana gets a Trump call from Whimsy, who asks for a favor. Ariana
brings her through. Whimsy wants to have another baby with Edwin. Ariana
is rather surprised to hear this and asks why. Whimsy wants to have a
girl. Ariana says she can make Whimsy fertile, but the sex of the child
is determined by the male. Isn't there any way she can filter this? Not
reliably. If Whimsy wants to be sure she'll have a girl, she'll need to
talk to Edwin.
Saturday, April 30, 11
Whimsy comes by to get another fertility treatment a week or so later,
and says that Edwin is being reluctant. Ariana asks what she expected,
given how they parted the last time. Whimsy says she's going to be
visiting Edwin more often, once a year. She doesn't understand why Edwin
takes this so personally. People don't marry or have children for love in
Chaos, after all. Ariana points out that Edwin is a romantic at heart.
Just because he lives in Chaos doesn't mean he ascribes to all the aspects
of its culture. Whimsy would rather he was practical about the
situation.
Thursday, May 5, 11
Whimsy has Ariana check to see if she's pregnant. She is, and it's a
girl this time, just like Whimsy wanted. Whimsy thanks Ariana and returns
to Amber.
Edwin is a bit moody for a while after Whimsy leaves, but after a few
weeks he returns to normal.
