Felix's log, Chapter 119

Thursday, August 24, 2994

Felix spends most of the morning waiting for Foster and Laughter to awake from their drug-induced slumber. There are several visitors to the infirmary during the course of the morning - Ariana comes and goes several times, Ronan shows up and Felix asks him to go after Iseult. Felix Trumps Mandor, and informs him of the accident. Those assembled eat lunch in the infirmary. Shortly after lunch, Foster starts to wake up. All of the visitors (aside from Felix, Tamaryn and Driscoll) are asked to leave. Felix's face falls when he confirms that Foster indeed has no memory.

Laughter starts to wake up shortly afterwards. She's pretty blank too. Tamaryn and Felix spend the time telling Foster about his life. Foster assumes that he was put up for adoption when Felix is unable to provide any details about his childhood. Tamaryn is gracious enough to field those questions, Felix jumping in when he feels he can. Caitt performs a similar role for Laughter.

Bleys explains the Pattern to the duo, and the hope that the Pattern will heal their memory.

Nicholas calls the family together for a state dinner, where he basically says, "Brand is dead if we find him." Big surprise.

Felix and Tamaryn return to their kids after dinner, and play another round of 40 questions with Foster.

Friday, August 25, 2994

The kids take the Pattern the next morning. Foster goes first...well, not really first. Felix remembers Foster's horrible, terrible, very bad day (the time Foster first took the Pattern). Felix makes the mistake of admitting that Foster almost died that first time. Bleys offers to walk first, so Foster can follow in his wake. Foster reaches the center and returns. His memory has been partially restored - he can remember people, and his feelings about them, but no events.

Laughter tries next. She remembers everything up to the first time she took the Pattern, but nothing else. Laughter takes off, all upset like - she goes back to Foil...the only home she remembers...to find that Beauty is no longer a baby, and that she (Laughter) no longer owns the Shadow.

Felix checks in with her later in the day. Bleys is helping himself to the manor's best brandy, and Laughter is breaking things. Felix goes and talks to her; she's hostile, and breaks things (again, big surprise). He tells her about her kids, and how one of them is off doing something extremely stupid (like mother, like daughter). Laughter gets angry, Felix Trumps Iseult, Iseult and Laughter argue, Ronan Trumps Felix, they talk, Iseult comes through, Laughter and Iseult cry. Felix leaves, mission accomplished.

Dinner's pretty tame.

At midnight, the family is summoned to the Great Hall. Nicholas informs those assembled that Brand has been caught and that he's to be killed. Brand is brought in, bleeding. Nimue appears, and says, "Nope, nope, nope, you can't kill him." Everyone gets to beat Brand up. Laughter does that Inego Montoya thing, and slashes Brand's check - marking him. No one else from Gérard's line touches Brand, all of them showing great restraint. Felix does, however, destroy a table, as an example of what he'd like to do to Brand. Nimue rips the Pattern out Brand, Brand's brain is wiped, and Clarissa is told to take Brand back to Avalon. Felix looks at his splinter-filled hands in dismay, and starts to wipe the blood from them gingerly. Whimsy heals them somehow. Felix then proceeds to pick up his mess.
