Whimsy's log,
Chapter 122
Wednesday, August 30, 2994
Whimsy awakens from odd dreams, which she immediately dismisses,
and spends a half-hour writing in her journal.
Whimsy gets in riding gear, intending to go riding with Teresa,
but when she attempts to Trump Teresa to seek advice on the problem of
Jack and Vixen, she cannot reach her. Whimsy attempts to Trump Vixen, and
also gets no response. She then attempts to Trump Eric, and is blocked by
something that seems vaguely Pattern-based. Perhaps the Jewel?
Whimsy then Trumps Nicholas, comes through...and they have a long
talk. She confesses her fears about Jack and her own weakness to him.
Nicholas says that Teresa will provide her with a Faerie Ward. He also
suggests that she avoid Eric, as he blames her and Nicholas for the
disappearance of Vixen. Whimsy feels he's overreacting...Vixen's only
been gone a day and a half.
In her room, Whimsy changes out of her riding gear and re-racks
her ring of strength. Afterwards, she Trumps Ariana and they talk about
Jack and such. They lunch together and are interrupted by Gavin, who
triggers every warning device in the room. Whimsy invites him to sit next
to her and tells him about magical items that possess sensitivity to
danger. She suggests he talk to Fiona.
After lunch, Whimsy Trumps Nicholas again and is given the Red
Stone. She then proceeds to the Pattern room, where she calls for Nimue,
who comes to talk to her. They talk about Jack and her future...her fears
and desires...and Nimue suggests she take time to think about her options.
Whimsy goes upstairs, and upon arriving in her room is Trumped by
Ariana, who explains that Ishmael is possessed. Upon arriving, Whimsy
sees that Ishmael has grown spikes out of his wrist and is fighting with
his own hand. She immediately hands the stone to Ariana and uses her
magic to petrify Ishmael. It fails and is absorbed by the stone. She
asks Ariana to leave the room. She then petrifies Ishmael. Whimsy
retrieves the Stone, and then Trumps Fiona...explaining some of the
problem. Fiona comes through and immediately attempts to de-petrify
Ishmael, and her spell is absorbed into the stone. Whimsy sighs and
leaves the room.
Fiona fixes Ishmael, and Whimsy returns.
Gavin tells the group about the book and his summoning...Whimsy
leaves again so that Mother can cast certain spells...Fiona draws a circle
on the floor. In the hallway, Whimsy is attacked by a gray smoke...she
attempts to block it with the Red Stone to no effect. Recognizing that
she is possessed, she conjures a sedative and immediately downs it.
When Ariana awakes her later, Whimsy feels faintly nauseous and
needs to pee badly. Fiona offers to accompany her to her rooms. (Damn!
Caught by Mom.) At a nearby restroom, Whimsy relieves herself and tosses
Jack's engagement ring into the privy.
Fiona and Whimsy talk, and everything is okay. Whimsy then goes
to Gavin's room and burns all his books, taking care to funnel the smoke
out of the castle using magic. The guards came anyway; she tells them to
go away. When she Trumps Mom to explain, Fiona announces that she has
already taken care of the problem.
At supper, Whimsy and Alexandra have a heart-to-heart. Alex is
ashamed of her behavior of the previous night, and feels that she has
disappointed Father. Whimsy actually feels moved for her sister's pain,
remembering how she felt in the face of Fiona's disappointment, so many
decades previously. They also talk about Jack, and Alex carefully points
out that Whimsy is way out of her league...and that her self-confidence
could be her destruction.
After supper, Whimsy chats with Grayson and Ariana. She learns
that Nicholas has ordered Grayson to walk the Pattern or spend time in the
dungeon. Whimsy asks Ariana to let her talk to Grayson, and they go to
the Pattern room, where Whimsy introduces him to Nimue and conjuration.
They walk the Pattern together. When Whimsy arrives in the center, she is
a much changed woman. She possesses the power of the Pattern and has been
purged of faerie magic, and the changes to her mind are also significant.
