8. William Lafayette Arthur

Lived at Arthur's Cove near Lookout Mountain, DeKalb Co., Alabama, approximately 9 miles West of Fort Payne, Alabama. Most of the information about William's family came from: "History of Walkers Chapel United Methodist Church and Walkers Chapel Cemetery 1841 - 1975" by Mary Jo Akin. Also, "Gone to Alabama" by E.J. Ladd
10/27/98: Received some additional confirmation from Linwood Arthur. Indicates that William is the son of Mathew Arthur, Sr.
9/30/98: Since all his known children were born in Georgia, it is possible that William was still in Georgia at the time of Mathew Arthur, Sr.'s death. Thus, it may be advantageous to examine the court probate records to determine if William is mentioned in any of the proceedings.

William ARTHUR; Private, served in Milton's 1st Regiment of Georgia Militia in the Seminole War of 1817 to 1818.

14. Charles T. (Talbot?) Arthur

The following letter was written by Barna B. Arthur, son of Charles Willis Nelson Arthur, 16 September 1931.
On the eve of this approaching Christmas let me pursue the idea that has constantly haunted me since that beautiful day last spring June 30th, spent with Charles, Barna and Nannie in Plainview, Texas. I undertake to write a little missive that may be of some interest to Henry and Bill (A.W.) and families of these as well as the families of my brothers, Will and Willis and my sister, Mary, and my own boy and girl, Charles and Julia. Then there are quite a number of others that deserve consideration - Wash, John Mc, Ella and Emma and perhaps many others. Perhaps each of you may appreciate the propriety of this method to save time and work and convey the idea, etc. Let me acknowledge, however, that the inspiration came largely through the manifest interest of Ethel (Barna's wife), who seems to have grasped the thought that one's own pleasure and profit may be enriched and expanded by unselfishly thinking of the good or ill that comes to all alike. She appears to be willing to learn. Not only so, but she requests all the data obtainable concerning the family. So here it is.
Now it has occured to me that others of you may have more than I am able to give. It would follow as a consequence that you should inform me and every other one interested. Who shall say that we may not all be enlightened to the extent of learning about each other something to cherish and esteem through the future generations?
In the home of Uncle Felix, one-half mile from Englewood, Tennessee, at the junction of the railroad from Knoxville to Atlanta and railroad from Athens to Telico Plains, time about 1890, when the Knoxville-Southern Railroad was being built and the name of the post office was Tellico Junction, the data that I shall here copy was taken from my grandfather's Bible.

Tolbert Arthur born 17 May 1825 (All children born in Georgia until Charles.)
John Floyd Arthur 2 May 1827
Pinnia Arthur 10 March 1829
Ransom Arthur 13 May 1831
Felix Arthur 15 Sept. 1833
Barna Arthur 6 April 1836
Nancy Arthur 9 April 1839
Louis Arthur 17 Jan. 1842
Charles Athur 25 Dec. 1843 (Born in Polk Co., Tenn., per 1850 census)
Sally Arthur 14 Feb. 1846 (Born in Polk Co., Tenn., per 1850 census).

The following family tree was made by me in McClellan County, Texas fifteen miles south of Waco, in 1898. Uncle Tolbert and Aunt Sarah spent the night with my father and mother at the home of my brother, Willis. The facts are based on the memory of the fourn, uncle, aunt, father and mother.
(Diagram shows Barna B. Arthu, son of Charles W. N. Arthur who died 24 Feb. 1926 in Itasca, Texas, who was the son of Charles Arthur who died 8 May 1878, who was the son of Charles Arthur.
I have no means of verifying the spelling in both of the instances above. It seems fair to assume that I should have copied that which was written verbatim.
From my father I have some interesting stories of his early life in Polk Co., Tennessee. Of his volunteering to serve in the Confederate Army in order to get his cripple brother releaased. Whereupon he was seized and put in the army in spite of his your and his brother also held. He afterward found a means of escape and made his way across the lines in to the Federal Army. There he was allowed to work on the railroad and around Cleveland and Chattanooga. When the was was over he went to Georgia to his uncle, Barna, who lived in Longswamp Creek in Pickens Co., Georgia.wh lived on Longswamp Creek in Pickens Co., and owned a vast deal of the creek bottom land. (I know several of my Great Uncle Barna's children and grandchildren.) This land and other lands along this creek, within my recollection have developed into the finest quarries of building marterial in the country. With consequent great wealth for the Barna Arthur famliy.
Most of you are acquainted with Tolbert, Floyd, and Charles, (my father). I had the pleasure of knowing intimately. Felix and his wife, Mary, who cared for his parents before grandmother wen to their son, Floyd in Texas. Uncle Felix and Aunt Mary also cared for the widow and orphan of John Arthur, who died in Texas at the home of Uncle Tolbert. While Emma, his daughter, was a baby in the home of Uncle Felix in Tennessee. Emma and I are much the brother and sister. She still lives at Englewood with her family, named Brown.
