Frequently Asked Questions (Students)

Python Coding Club: During the school year, we host a free weekly coding club for high school students, where we introduce them to core coding concepts through the Python coding language. In the second semester, students will form teams and work on a data science capstone project together. In this project, students analyze a real-world dataset of their choosing. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an experienced coder, you will get something out of this data science experience!

Summer Workshops: GWC hosts workshops both in collaboration with other local organizations and independently. Our independent workshops usually take place in Detroit, are half a day long, and are free! Previous topics have covered “Plotting gene expression in R”, “AI: Decision Trees”, and “AI: ChatGPT”.

Anyone in grades 9–12 who is interested in coding and wants to be part of a supportive learning environment is welcome to apply. No prior experience is required! We encourage applicants from all backgrounds and gender identities.

During the summer, we have much more flexibility to travel beyond Ann Arbor! If you’re interested in us teaching a workshop at your school, please feel free to reach out to us and connect us with your science teacher or other school staff.

Starting in 2026, we may start hosting a virtual summer workshop so that any can attend. All you will need is a laptop/computer and an internet connection!
