The information included in these charts is based on the research of Father Ed Kinney, Mary Ann Pattison, Carole Kinney, Tom Kinney, Helena Speed, Eugene Kenny, Donna McGinty, Molly McCormick-Ortega, Charlie Fuchs, and others. Major sources include:

  • The Kinney Family of Irish Lane : From the Barony of Moycarn to the Homestead in Fitchburg, Wisconsin by Tom Kinney and Carole Kinney (1994)
  • Irish Settlers of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, 1840-1860 by Tom Kinney (1993)
  • From County Mayo to St. Croix County : a history of the northern branch of the Kinney family by Mary Ann Pattison and Greg Kinney (1983) pdf version
  • Timothy Kinney: An Autobiography by Timothy Kinney (1920) pdf version
  • Ancestry.com -- Donna McGinty and Molly Ortega and others have created an extensive Kinney genealogy in Ancestry.com that often includes citations to original records and scans of many documents, obituaries, newspaper articles, and photographs.
  • On-line resources: Federal and state census are available online through a variety of sources, including Ancesry.com, The social security index and state birth, death and marriage are available for most states. Newspaper obituaries (some free, some at a charge) and the "Find a Grave" website are also useful sources.

As you will see, the charts are by no means complete. If you can help fill in any holes, or make any corrections, please contact Greg Kinney at gkinney@umich.edu. You can use the family chart form to submit information.

Note on access: These charts started out as posters for the Edmond Kinney line at the 2010 Kinney picnic in Hudson, Wisconsin. The online charts are intended to provide family members an easily accessible introduction to Kinney genealogy without the time and expense required for a deep dive into ancestry.com. (Though reading the books and exploring ancestry.com is highly recommended.)

Because the charts are image files you cannot use the browser search box to search for names. The charts were designed for poster size printing and will not print well on a conventional printer. A larger computer screen makes viewing the charts easier, but they do work well on ipads and tablets.

The charts are currently not available through Google or other internet searches, in part because they include information about living people some may not want easily available to the world (although almost everything in the charts can be found somewhere on the internet.) That said, feel free to share the the url with family members.
