METHODOLOGY FOR CREATING TABLE

1. Access American Factfinder http://factfinder.census.gov/
2. Choose DATA SETS
3. Choose 2000 CENSUS/SUMMARY FILE 1
4. Choose DETAILED TABLES

5. Choose Geography using the default LIST Geography screen

    a. Choose County (as geographic level)
    b. Choose State (Michigan)
    c. Choose Washtenaw County and ADD
    d. NEXT

6. Use the default SUBJECT search screen

    a. Page down the subjects, highlight AGE, and search
    b. Choose Tables 12, 12A-12G, in order. ADD.
    c. Choose Table 12H and ADD.
    d. SHOW Table.

7. Click on PRINT/DOWNLOAD instruction at top of screen.

    a. Choose DOWNLOAD.
    b. Check off CSV format and OK.
    c. Name drive location and file.

8. Open up spreadsheet in EXCEL.

    a. Alter the first of the tables to incorporate all of the tables.
    b. Remove the county name at the head of the second column (e.g. Washtenaw) and make it the title of the table.
    c. Replace the "Washtenaw" heading at the top of the second column with the variable that column represents (e.g. "total")
    d. Leave the leftmost column intact.
    e. CUT and PASTE the data in the remaining tables into columns that line up with the correct ages.
    f. Be sure to name the top of each column correctly.
    g. Leave a blank column between 2+ Races and Hispanic to indicate that Hispanic should not be added to the total.
    h. Highlight the remnants of the columns you cut and delete them.
