The Documents Center's Guide to the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cenguide.html, describes the Census questions and geography. An interactive version, http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cenindex, permits users to determine whether a question is 100% or sample and then identify a variety of paper, CD-ROM, internet, or magentic tape products which could contain the data.
A facsimile of the question is available from http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/cicdoc/cen90app/question.htm.
There is a slide show describing the 1990 Census.
The definitions used for metropolitan areas in the 1990 Census were changed in 1993, so subsequent economic data has new definitions.
