The urban myths that we have gathered for this website were found by conducting interviews with orientation tour guides, students, alumni and staff. To determine the popularity, believability and longevity of these certain myths, we randomly distributed one-hundred twenty-five surveys to the current student population.
One of the main goals of this project that we tried to accomplish was to locate the origin of these myths. Conducting interiews was an integral part of our investigation. Upon research, we found that orientation guides like to make up things to make the tour more interesting. Therefore, the myth regarding the cube and its ability to generate electricity for the University stems from the staff in charge of hiring orientation leaders. A particular tour guide we interviewed claimed that upon being trained for the job, was told that a former orientation guide decided to initiate this myth for humorous purposes. Since the creation of that myth, it has proved longevity.
Upon more research and our own inferences, we believe that orientation leaders are the reason for the origin of a majority of the myths. In regards to the myth about the unmarked grave containing bodies under Randall Laboratory, we have found this myth to be true which we learned in our History 265 class.
