What is the purpose
of IASA?
IASA serves to promote the various aspects of
Indian culture and heritage through community building and service,
professional development, and political, social, and cultural
awareness events. Further, IASA continues to build a network of
Indian American students as well as create links with the broader
Asian American community.
What events
does IASA sponsor?
The most popular event is the cultural show
held annually during November and is one of the largest in the
nation. Other events include Gandhi Day of Service, helping to
create a South Asian Student Conference, Disco Dandia (a Garba/Raas
held during welcome week), Field Day, IASA Formal/Elections Ball,
Mr./Mrs. IASA Competition, Senior Reception, and several smaller
events throughout the year. What are your membership numbers?
Our membership comprised of both Indians and non-Indians, undergraduate
and graduate students, numbers about 550, making it the largest
student organization on campus. Approximately half of these are
active members, meaning they take part in the cultural show or
are involved with one of our many committees.
How do I become a member?
Attend the mass meeting the first week of school.
If you miss this, just come in during IASA office hours (Michigan
Union-Room 4347) anytime throughout the year to fill out a short
form.
What are the advantages?
You will meet a ton of people, make long-lasting
friendships, get involved with different parts of campus, and
learn a great deal about South Asian Culture. Further, many events
are limited to IASA members.
