University funding for entering students:

Students considering graduate studies should be aware that University funding is competitive. We strongly urge you to apply, in addition, for external fellowships. To assist you we have also listed some of the available sources of external funding. Each of the following university fellowships for entering students combines semesters of full fellowship (stipend, tuition, and healthcare) with terms in which the student works as a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) and receives pay, tuition, and healthcare.

LSA Regents' Fellowships: The program nominates eligible students from the pool of admissions candidates.

FLAS(Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships: The student applies to the appropriate Area Center. The program must support your application, so you must let us know at the time you apply for admission that you are applying for this fellowship.

Rackham Merit Fellowships: This fellowship is for qualified under-represented minority students. The program nominates eligible students from the pool of admissions applicants.

Rackham Non-Traditional Fellowship: This fellowship is for students who wish to return to graduate school after an extended absence. You must have been away from academic study for at least five years and meet the University of Michigan's criteria for Michigan Resident tuition. The program nominates eligible students, but the nomination must include a statement from the student. Please let us know if you are interested in this fellowship and include a statement explaining how your situation fits within the intent of the fellowship. (This essay should address the reasons and circumstances relating to the interruption of studies, academic/professional interests, and motivation for and ability to return to school.)
