Why does this site not contain transcripts of the parish registers of St Saviour — the fair-copy records of baptisms, marriages, and burials — when other similar records with the same subject matter are available here?

The St Saviour parish registers, like most other documents on this site, are held at The London Archives (TLA). There are four bound volumes for our period.

  • 1. 1538-1563 (P92/SAV/0356)
  • 2. 1563-1570 (P92/SAV/0357)
  • 3. 1570-1610 (P92/SAV/3001)
  • 4. 1609-1653 (P92/SAV/3002)

Having been much used in the past, and not always carefully, these four volumes are now ‘not available for general access’, according to the TLA catalogue. Users are directed to microfilms: X097/420 for the first two volumes, X039/001 for the third, and X039/002 for the fourth. These records are also, according to the catalogue, ‘available online via Ancestry.co.uk' (UK) or Ancestry.com (North America). 'Ancestry' is a commercial genealogy site requiring membership.

There are further restrictions on the use of the registers. [Need text here.]
