SmartGirl.com Advisory Board (2001 - 2002)
SmartGirl.com was the brainchild of Isabel Walcott who created a vibrant and open-minded web community for adolescent girls to share life’s challenges. As her project grew to more than 200,000 members, Ms Walcott contacted the UM to see if we would accept the project as a gift and maintain it for the sake of the community. Dr. Abigail Stewart, Director of the Institute for Women and Gender Studies, accepted the site for the UM as a research project and received NSF grants to transfer and operate the site by UM staff and students. I acted as an advisor for the technical transfer of the site, selection of staff and consultants for the re-architecture of the site and ongoing operation. It remains as one of the earliest social networking applications of the web, providing peer support, mentoring and serving as am opt-in research project for UM studies in gender. |
