Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - Quincy
68 miles. Chipley, FL to Quincy Motor lodge, Quincy, FL
We woke up early, at 4:45 to get an early start. We
are getting to bed around 6 or 6:30 so we are getting at least 10 hours of sleep
a night. It was about 48 degrees, and as it got closer to dawn, the fog rolled
in, it was a fairly thick fog. We got on the road, Highway 90, at 6:45. There
was no shoulder, and with the fog made for riding that was not relaxing.
We rode the 20 miles to Marianna (pop. 6292) where we
had a second breakfast while the fog lifted. With the fog gone it warmed up
rapidly and came close to a record high for the area with the usual east wind.
For the rest of the day we paralleled U.S. 90 on excellent county roads past a
mix of farm, horse ranches and forest. There is a lot of forest in north
Florida.
We passed thru Grand Ridge, Sneads (pop. 1746),
Chattahochee (pop. 4382)), Gretna (pop.1981) to Quincy (pop. 7444), our
destination. All of these towns are located on uplands above the swamps or
rivers below and Chattahoochee had a very steep climb up from the Apalachicola
River while Quincy has several notable hills. We are really enjoying the riding
and the great weather comprising this part of our trip.
