Friday, December 7, 2001 - Way Down Upon The Suwannee River
67 miles. Monticello, FL to Spirit of Suwannee River Campground, Suwannee
Spring, FL (north of Live Oak, on the river)
Today turned out to be another typical December day
in Northern Florida, mostly sunny with light breezes and a high in the mid 70's.
In other words another perfect day for cycling. The total run for the day was 67
miles thru Monticello (pop.2573), Greenville (pop. 950), another side of the
tracks town, Madison (pop. 3345), Home of the Four Freedoms, and Lee (pop. 306),
Little But Proud.
We cruised on U.S. 90 for about 47 miles before
finishing the last 15 miles on C.R. 132. One thing about all the towns in
northern Florida so far, they are all on hilly uplands, Which makes sense to
avoid the inevitable flooding in the low lying areas and also as protection from
hostile Indian attack during initial settlement.
After lunch at Madison we got into some level terrain
and burned the last 32 miles almost without break. It took a little over two
hours all told and we were really moving. Sometimes you feel like attacking and
conditions are favorable. We both felt as one with our bikes.
