Sunday, November 11, 2001 - Lake Jackson
52 miles. Wharton, TX to Aunt Dorothy's, Lake Jackson, TX
We were surprised to wake up to a clear morning,
having expected fog once again. Right before we left the hotel a flock of large
birds flew over and a local claimed they were endangered whooping cranes. We are
attempting to authenticate this claim.
We got a little bit later start than usual because we
knew we only had 50 miles, and the miles in this part of the state seem shorter
than the miles in W. Texas. We picked good roads thru farmland and minimally
populated little towns. As we neared Lake Jackson, we took a break at a little
roadside picnic area.
As we were resting a number of people riding horses and
2 covered wagons being pulled by mules went by the park. It looked like a more
difficult way to travel long distances than bicycles and slower. After the
break, there was much evidence that they had come down the same road that we
were now riding on. We passed thru Lago (pop. ?), Boling (pop. 1152), Pledger
(pop. 159), Danciger (pop. 314), West Columbia (pop. 5.350) and Brazoria (Pop.
3,354).
In Pledger we took a break across from a rocking
Baptist church. Close to Lake Jackson we passed by miles of dense forest, some
of it being cleared for new homes. This entire area is growing rapidly. We
arrived at Dorothy's, where she lives with her daughter and son-in-law Becky and
Phil around 3:30. We had a nice reunion, not having seen Aunt Dorothy for 4 or 5
years, and Becky, Jeff's cousin for 26 years. We had a wonderful dinner, and a
great time reminiscing.
