Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - Good Day
26 miles. Aguila AZ to Circle JR Motel, Wickenburg AZ
Due to a flood of requests (well 2 anyway) for Joan to
write some of the entries, here I go....
After a grueling day yesterday we (Joan) decided that
we should have an easy day. Since the choices (based on where there are
places to stay) were 25 miles and 70 miles, it was an easy choice. Jeff
has been doing all kinds of calculations to make sure that we get to the Keys by
Christmas, so far we are on schedule. We will pick up the mileage some
when we get out of the mountains.
We allowed ourselves to sleep in until 6:30 today since
it was a short day. Normally we get up at 5:15 while it is still dark and
get on the road at dawn. Of course we go to bed at 8:00. Now that we
have moved so far east in the time zone, we will get up even earlier.
The ride today was relaxing and pleasant. A
slight climb for half the ride, then a nice decent into Wickenburg. The weather
has been quite nice now that we are out of the desert, in the 80s with low
humidity.
We had intended to camp just outside of town, but there
wasn't anyone in the office, so we decided to treat ourselves to a motel room.
One's idea of luxury really changes when you bike tour! We are also
catching up on all the news of the invasion as it is difficult to keep up when
we are camping.
P.S. from Jeff. I thought I would add this incident. As we were
leaving Aguila we passed cropland and in one field were Mexicans, illegals we
were assured, getting ready for a day's work. They waved and so did we and I
then slipped into my bilingual mode and piped up with, "Buenas dias."
Came the laconic reply, "Yeah." We also passed a nice battalion
of Saguaro cactus.
