Sunday, October 14, 2001 - It's Gecko, not Geico
40 miles. Globe, AZ to primitive camping, Coolidge Dam AZ
Today started out with a little bit of climbing, then a
nice 8 mile gradual decent before we started climbing. In all, there were
3 significant climbs, but none too awful. That first big climb in Cailf.
to Potrero put all other climbs in prospective.
We are nearing the end of the saguaro cactus range,
Jeff will have to find a different plant to write about.
We got in quite early today as it was an easy ride.
We are a few miles past the Coolidge Dam, camping in a (very) primitive
camping ground on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. We were supposed to get a
permit to camp here, but the store near the campground that was supposed to have
them did not, the place to get them was 15 miles back from the direction we
came, hopefully no one will stop to check. We are the only ones here, so it is
very quiet. We are planning on not pitching the tent because there isn't a
good place to put it. It will be the first night camping under the stars
on this trip.
We have finished our fabulous dinner of canned soup,
followed by a PBJ. We will have some canned fruit later. No store
that has much to offer is very near. There are 2 or 3 gekkos (geckos?)
playing around on the table and crawling on our bikes, they are pretty cute.
Some Jeff humor: Hey, does anyone know why all
the dams in this country are named after Republicans? There are Hoover,
Roosevelt and now Coolidge. Reagan has an airport and an aircraft carrier
and about everything else. Bill Clinton will be lucky to have a garbage
scow named in his honor.
