Saturday, October 27, 2001 - Dragging into Alpine
30 miles. Fort Davis, TX to Danny Boy RV Park, Alpine, TX
After the very, very long day to Fort Davis State Park,
we turned off the alarm and slept in until around 8:00. We took our time
getting ready, having decided to only go to Alpine, a mere 30 miles away, with
minimal climbing.
We got on the road around 10:00 or so. We road
the 4 miles to the town of Fort Davis and bought a few things to eat for the
ride, tho' it turned out not to be enough.
We were still quite exhausted from the previous
day's ride, so when it turned out that there was a head wind, it really made for
difficult riding. The first 20 miles were thru several interesting
canyons After that much of the ride was on a slight incline. We were
pretty much out of food as we pulled into Alpine (pop. 5637), looking for a good
restaurant meal. In a town the size of Alpine, we thought it would be easy
to find any number of places to eat, but we were wrong. We finally found
'Taco Hut' and got a 6 pack of tacos, which was really just a snack to hold us
to a real meal.
We then found the Coast to Coast Hardware store, which
is about the only place between El Paso and Del Rio that has bike parts. I
(Joan) wanted to get a thorn resistant inner tube for my front wheel. So
far the count is 5 flats for Joan, 0 for Jeff. All of my flats have been
on the front tire, 4 of which have been from goatheads (horrible little burrs
that puncture anything). Luckily they had one left and it is now
installed. Let's hope it works.
Then on to the grocery store to stock up on dinner and snack
supplies, then to the RV park.
