Monday, October 29, 2001 - Marathon to Sanderson, Our First55 miles. Marathon, TX to Budget Inn Motel, Sanderson, TX We got up at seven and went into the main house and Angelo and Diane allowed us to prepare our own breakfast of egg and toast with fried tamatillos. Then it was time to head for Sanderson and of course Angel cycled with us for the first l6 miles We had a great time talking with him until it was time for him to turn back for Marathon. We will never forget their kindness to us. The rest of the ride was a gradual descent against a steadily increasing headwind. All in all it was easy riding. The next several days promise more steady headwinds from the worst possible direction for us, the southeast. Cyclotouring's Third Dimension will be our constant companion for the next several days. The final 10 miles wound around in a huge bend of the Sanderson Canyon with the railroad once again our consort. We arrived in Sanderson and it fit the impression I expected from what we had learned from Angelo. Sanderson had a lot of railroad workers as residents until the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific RR's merged two years ago and laid off everyone who worked in Sanderson. This was a major body blow to the local economy and the downtown area showed it. People just had to leave. We then found the local small grocery store to stock up for tomorrow's ride. We were talking to the owner, who was interested in Jeff's hat, which we had found way back in California. The cap says Colima.Col. We hadn't really thought too much about it, and assumed that it meant Colima , Columbia, but it turns out that Colima, Colima is in Mexico and is where the store owner is from. We stand corrected. There were no campgrounds for tenters in town, so we found a motel room. |
