We were riding for miles along the Father of Waters,
the Mississippi, and I was expecting great views of the river. I forgot one
thing; the Army Corps of Engineers has built levees all along the river to
control it during periods of high water and they block the view of the river
from the road. Three times I stopped and went to the top of the levee but each
time all I could see, like the bear, was the other side of the levee and
trees.
As we rode along LA-420 toward the ferry to St
Francisville the following exchange took place:
Cyclist No. 1, "It looks like they don't want you up on the levee
here." (referring to the fence along the levee-side here)
Cyclist No.2, "Yes."
Cyclist No. 1, "There is no way to get up there and look."
Cyclist No. 2: "Uh-huh."
Cyclist No. 1: "There aren't any holes in the levee either."
"Hope not!" interjected the Louisianan repairing his front yard fence
across from the levee as the cyclists sped by at 15 MPH.
Laughter from the passing cyclists.
