Isaac Asimov's Robot City Book 1 Odessy (1987) 202 pages by Michael P Kube-McDowell.
Derec finds himself in an escape pod with no memory of how he got there, who or where he is. He's only going by Derec because it's on his jumpsuit. He lands on an asteroid that is inhabited only by robots and is frustrated by the lack of information he's receiving, and their general lack of help. Oh, they are bound by the laws of robotics to keep him safe, but Derec feels more like a prisoner than anything else. As the scene shifts that theme is repeated. The sparsity of information, especially about himself, a feeling of being trapped, and not much help from others.
There is an emphasis on the laws of robotics, in the beginning this is reinforced by stating the laws. When on the alien raider ship, there is a discussion of how the first law applies or doesn't to aliens.
With different authors for the books in the series I thought the stories would be complete, but it appears as if this is just the first chapter. So I can see where the author was sort of constrained, with here's Derec, you can't give away too much and it has to end with him just reaching the Robot City, and I think this was written for the young adult section.
