The only lake in Scotland

The ruins of the 13th century Inchmahome Priory, on an island in the only lake in Scotland. There is no real difference between a loch and a lake, though lochs are typically long and narrow and surrounded by hills. Lake of Menteith got its name from a mistranslation of the Lowland Scots Laich o Menteith, “laich” simply means “low place.”

Scotland has a real wealth of elegant ruins.

Heather among the grey arches.

Another view.

My favorite picture, here you can actually see the lake.

Yet another.

The audacious resiliency of life.

Heather and I with one of the local ancients.

Heather and Castle Stalker, yet another castle in a beautiful setting.

Yet another beautiful view on the way to the west coast.

We made it to the seaside village of Portree. It is quite a nice and pretty little fishing village and stopover on the way to the Isle of Skye.

We were turned away at all three local restaurants because they were too busy (and understaffed), one had two wedding parties that night. So we joined the locals and got take out from Grumpy’s. The fish and chips was quite good and they even had veggie burgers.
