Ghent provides an interesting contrast to Bruges. Ghent was medieval Europe's second largest city, after Paris. There are many old buildings and
beautiful canals, but these are mixed with more modern structures and features like trolley lines. Ghent's
large University population gives the city a youthful feeling.

The Gravensteen, a fortress built by the counts of Flanders during the
12th century. It was once occupied by students from Ghent University who were protesting a one cent rise in the cost of beer.
