Travels in Europe, Summer 2004

2004 Visit to Leuven

Photo Index

Leuven is a European college town, home to the Katholieke University van Leuven, historically one of Europe's most highly regarded universities and a bastion of Catholicism during Protestant rule of Flanders.

This is a historic section of campus where visiting professors stay and selected students (music majors with a strong Catholic background) are also allowed. It is considered one of the quieter sections of campus.

There are numerous icons built into the walls, watching over this section of campus.

This is the Pope's College.

This church is near the above two locations.

One of the early forms of punishment for plagarism?

The library.

The campus was heavily bombed in World War II and was rebuilt afterwards with the help of American universities. There are numerous stones honoring those universities, this one is for the University of Chicago.

The "world's largest outdoor bar." What would appear to be the central market place in any other historic Flemish city is actually dozens of pubs with outdoor seating. This is about half of one side, the other three sides are pubs as well. The place is packed when the students are in town.

Going native.

On the town square.

How deep is this well? This is an empirical question. (Perhaps I will be made into a saint!)

Flemish cuisine.

Our gracious hosts, Andreas and Sylvia.

That's the end of the road for now, more adventures to come!
