Heather and Dan at the Parque Central, with the Palace of the Captains General, home to the colonial rulers, in the background.
The Cathedral of San Jose, built by conscripted Mayans to be the most spectacular colonial building in Central America.

Dan at the famous fountain in the Parque Central.
The front facade of a colonial church, some of the statues lost their heads during tumultuous times.
The arch of Santa Catalina, probably the most recognized landmark in Antigua. It used to connect two parts of a large convent on opposite sides of the street, so the nuns could get from one part to the other without having contact with the outside world.
The facade of another ruined church. Some of the statues have escaped.
Here is a nicely decorated window looking out onto the street. We were very impressed with Guatemalans' aesthetic taste, the furniture and decor was very nice, noticeably different from other areas of Central America.
Another ruined church.
This church is still functional; we went inside to see the glass boxes for the saints. There were men bringing up buckets of sand/dirt from the lower level through a hole in the floor.
Yet another ruined church, one that I saw frequently on postcards.
