Etiology/ Pathogenesis

Age of Onset

Usually first few weeks of life

Classic Presentation

Sudden jerking movements in all limbs, in early stages of sleep, never consistently localized, can't stop with restraint. Ends with waking.
Seen only during quiet sleep

Rarer Symptoms

Usual Course

Usually in babies and toddlers, most will grow out of the condition.

Genetics

Groups at high risk

Diagnostic Testing

EEG-normal

MRI/CT-normal

Differential

Focal clonic or myoclonic seizures
Infantile spasms
Benign infantile myoclonus

Treatment

None needed. Anticonvulsants may suppress through sedation.
