Definition

Etiology/ Pathogenesis

Not known
Not the result of an abnormal brain discharge.
A result of psychological disturbance, usually involuntary, a form of conversion disorder.

Age of Onset

Usually between 10 and 18 years, girls more than boys.

Classic Presentation

The presentation of pseudoseizures is highly variable. The episodes may be similar to actual seizures, however have strange verbalizations, posturing, or unusual tonic or clonic movements. Pseudoseizures never present with cyanosis, loss of sphincter control, abnormal plantar responses or injury. Patients may present on several anticonvulsants, which are not working.
