Computer Based Homework

You are responsible for completing biweekly computer-based homework assignments, as listed in the syllabus. These assignments are an important part of the course and are graded. To pick up or submit homework, go to the CAP server at http://cap.physics.lsa.umich.edu/. Before you can pick up your CBH assignments, you must get a password. The password will be sent to you by email after you register at the CAP server. At the end of the term the total number of CBH points for each student will be calculated and divided by the total possible number of points to get the homework percentage. CBH scores amount to 15% of the course grade.

CBH problems are taken from a server maintained by the Physics Department. You can download and print out the problems for each assignment at your leisure. When you believe you have solved the problems, you can log on to the CAP server and submit your answers electronically. The computer will score your answers and provide you with immediate feedback. Each student will have the same general problems in their assignments, but the details of the problems will be varied randomly for each student. Hence you will have to work out your own individual answer to your specific problems. If the solution you submit first for a given problem is incorrect, you may make additional attempts, up to a limit that is stated in the problem. For problems which have numerical solutions your answer must agree with the correct one to within 1%. Some problems may be multiple choice. No credit will be given for homework submitted after the deadline. Each CBH assignment is due at 8:00 a.m. on the day shown in the syllabus. In using the CAP server there is some danger of network access failure. To avoid undue sensitivity to occasional network troubles, do not wait until the last moment to submit your homework answers. Barring a major, prolonged outage network, access difficulty will not be accepted as an excuse for late homework. Full solutions to the homework problems will be available on the Web after the due dates. Statistical information on the graded homework will be made available periodically during the semester.
