Roundtable Discussions
Each table will discuss one of 3 themes, with an emphasis on the role advising plays (or should play).  Each table will develop a brief action proposal.

Theme One:  Engagement. For many reasons, student engagement has been increasingly emphasized in undergraduate education.  Discussion will address current and potential roles advisors may play in this trend; from advising students about to actually shaping opportunities.

Theme Two:  Reflection.  The process by which students come to understand, take responsibility for, and build upon the choices that comprise their education (in its broadest sense) is a critically important piece of liberal education.  Despite the undeniably high quality of education and resources available to UM undergraduates, there are consistent factors here that militate against reflection (e.g. class size).  How can advising programs, and advisors in particular, facilitate this process?

Theme Three:  The Nature of Advising.  How does advising as it is practiced (in all its forms) on this campus position advisors to act as promulgators of UM academic culture?

9:20-10:00

Each table will draft a proposal for further action (most likely based on their discussion), with an emphasis on practicality and cooperation between CSP and Newnan advisors.

Proposal to include following elements:
  • Goal: (e.g., increase advisor awareness of civic engagement opportunities in Ann Arbor area)

  • Action Recommendation: general plan with details as time allows (e.g., assess current civic engagement opportunities, establish means for site visits, etc.)
