Akira class heavy cruiser
U.S.S. New Jersey NCC-63462
History:The Akira-class is a large Federation cruiser/carrier type commonly seen in combat and patrol roles. These starships have an unconventional twin secondary hull design, and are equipped with a heavily armed dorsal torpedo pod and a large flight deck in the primary hull. The Akira-class starship was designed by Alex Jaeger at Industrial Light and Magic, and first appeared in the feature film Star Trek: First Contact, November 1996. It has since appeared in the Deep Space Nine and Voyager television series.
Naming:U.S.S. New Jersey is named after Dr. Sidney Zwiebel from the Banzai Institute.

Model notes:This model was built by Markus C. Nee and was completed in April 1999. It is an almost-straight-from-the-box Starcrafts resin model kit. The only part I modified was the bridge module. I lost the original bridge, so I substituted one from an AMT Enterprise-D kit. At approximately 11.5" in length, the kit measures a bit small for the claimed 1:1400 scale, but the proportions and details are very accurate. I'm guessing the model kit was designed before the actual dimensions were published. The specifications above are based on kit measurements, and not official data. The parts are well detailed, and the fit is excellent. Very little cleanup was necessary. The model was painted using Gunze Sangyo acrylic paints, and finished with Thomas Models decals. Escape pod covers are from the AMT/Ertl Enterprise-E decal sheet, and the custom name and registry lettering was done with Chartpak dry transfers. All photography on this page by Steve Stock.
