- 10-20 times the gas production of Halley at comparable rH => The largest of any comet in modern times => Nucleus diameter 40-80 km (65-500 Halleys - 15x8x8 km)
- About 3-7 times as dusty as Halley relative to gas
- Spectacular visual sight because it was intrinsically large and nearly circumpolar
- Observed spectroscopically over an unprecedented range of distance from the sun: 7 AU before perihelion to probably >> 7 AU after possibly to > 20 AU - bare nucleus prediscovery images in April 1993, possibly Sept. 1991
