- VERY DUSTY - optical measurements (Afr) 5 or more times as dusty as Halley (Schleicher et al. 1997; many, many others)
- Thermal IR measurements: T(color) = 475 K at 1.15 AU (Williams et al. 1997; Hanner et al 1998) Much higher than the black-body temperature (~260K) Much higher than the “typical” bright comet (~300 K) => large population of small hot grains
- Dust tail image analysis: => old particle trajectories give time history (Fulle et al. 1998) => fast dust velocities for 10 mm particles out to r=13 AU => consistent with high (superheated) CO velocities
