Greetings again from the Michigan Club Squash Team!
We are officially in the month of June which brings us to the second edition of the Michigan Squash Newsletter. We’ll first include a blast from the past and then look towards the future.
When this team originally formed, we were under the impression that it was the first competitive squash team at the University of Michigan. Boy, were we wrong! Just recently, we have discovered the Michigan Squash Team that competed from about 1980 to 1983. Led by players including Bill Austin, George Kalman, and Ross Campbell, the team traveled to the College National Championships each year, even finishing as the 14th best team in the nation in 1982! We could not be more excited to hear that our team has some history behind it, and we hope to not only make our alumni proud but to keep them involved as we build our program and seek long-term success.
Turning our attention towards the future of this team, we have been making a concrete effort to recruit new players to Michigan. In that light, we could not be more pleased to introduce our class of 2024 recruits, Anourag Shah and Gaurav Shekhawat. Hailing from NYC, Anourag is coming to Umich as a math and political science major. He has been playing squash for about 4 years at the WestChester Squash Academy and has a rating of 5.02. Gaurav is from Chicago, IL and will be majoring in computer engineering. He has been playing squash for about 10 years at the University Club of Chicago and boasts a rating of 4.72. Welcome boys!
On top of these two, we are in contact with several other players who will be trying out for the team next fall. It is certainly going to be a competitive year, but we know that everyone will continue to support and push one another.
That is all for this month’s edition! We have postponed our website launch to next month, so we hope you will look forward to learning about that during our next newsletter.
Thank you for reading!
Sincerely,
Lou Alpert ‘22
