The Nitrogen cycle
A number of biologically mediated processes control N transformations:
nitrification: oxidation of NH4 to NO2, and NO2 to NO3
ammonification: breakdown of Org N to NH4
fixation: assimilation of elemental N (N2 from atmosphere) into org N
assimilation: conversion of NO3,and NH4 to org N
denitrification: conversion of NO3 to elemental N2
together these processes control Nitrogen cycling in the aquatic environment
