MAINTAINING A CONNECTION
Teachers and classmates can be kept informed and in contact while a child is hospitalized. Requesting classmates to send cards and letters that include information on activities or events helps maintain a connection. The child can also be encouraged to send cards or letters back or assisted to send information to let classmates know as well.
Some hospitals allow patient and family to set up a web site where information can be posted about progress. Check with the hospital staff to see if this is possible and if you post information, let the teacher or classmates know the address so they can access it. Information about the University of Michigan's patient web sites can be found at: http://www.carepages.com/umich
Speak with your child about having visitors or having a friend accompany him/her during trips to the hospital.
