My
proposal for the aqua studio project is to design a building that will bring
data about changing water levels in the Great Lakes to a population of boaters,
with the aim of bringing about a greater level of awareness about the Great
Lakes. The building is a floating rest stop for exurban boaters of the Great
Lakes region and is located offshore on Lake Michigan. It includes programmatic
elements such as a restaurant and bar, convenience store, and docking facilities
with a fueling station. Within the building there is a model that displays
the information that GLERL collects on water levels of Lake Michigan. A lighting
system would display information about current water levels relative to historical
data through varying illumination levels. Because illumination levels would
change over time, boaters visiting this building once or twice a season would
gather for different activities in different physical locations on each visit,
choosing locations with illumination levels that suited their needs. For example,
readers would choose to situate themselves in lighter spaces, and people gathering
for conversation may choose less illuminated space. This passive system will
subtly make visible the otherwise invisible or at least hidden data that is
being collected about an occurrence that has far-reaching implications on Great
Lakes ecosystems, commerce, and recreation.
