Open Letter
Dear Nanjing Medical University (NMU) Alumni,
Greetings!
To facilitate the alumni connection and the information exchange,
we have recently made the effort to creat an alumni newsletter, which will
be issued monthly through email and the Overseas NMU Alumni Association
(ONMUAA, to be formed) homepage, as well as with hard copies. This first
issue announces the recent formation of a Steering Committee which is trying to
establish the ONMUAA, and calls for comments and participation in the
organizing process.

Open Letter To NMU Overseas Alumni(ae)
Call For Organizing the Overseas Alumni Association
Dear Overseas Nanjing Medical University Alumni(ae),
We would like to have the honor to announce to you that we have
recently formed a Steering Committee to guide the process of organizing the
Overseas Nanjing Medical University Alumni(ae) Association (ONMUAA) and to
facilitate the NMU alumni networking throughout the world. For quite a number
of years, we all have been looking forward to the formation of such an
association where we can have our own INTERNATIONAL HOMEPLACE outside
China to communicate, discuss, exchange, express, connect, socialize, help or
look for help, contribute, unify, ......, and be proud of. Now we are
pleased to inform you that we have initiated the organizing process. The
establishment of this Steering Committee is the first step in this endeavor.
We are here to ask you for your participation and assistance as well as to
welcome your comments and suggestions. Together we will bring the association
into being very soon. Here are the outlines on the Steering Committee's plan:
PURPOSE TO FORM THE STEERING COMMITTEE
1) To help making a better worldwide alumni connection;
2) To help establishing the ONMUAA.
PURPOSE TO FORM THE ONMUAA AND BENEFITS TO OUR ALUMNI
1) To satisfy the alumni's needs;
Many of us have long expressed our interest in the issue and/or
strongly indicated the urgency to form our association in order to be better
connected with each other worldwide;
2) To establish a positive image of ourselves as a group in particular
and the NMU in general outside China;
3) To build up a stronger connection among alumni and families, with
NMU campus, with other Chinese university alumni associations, and with other
institutions if necessary;
4) To help each other with mutually interested issues, career
development, scientific information exchange and possibly in research
collaboration among alumni and with Nanjing campus. Currently we expect
more than two hundred NMU alumni(ae) are working or studying outside China
where a lot of us have well established ourselves in life and career. Many
have achieved a great deal academically or professionally, which has been well
recognized by the scientific community. Alumni research results have been
well published in many important national and international scientific
journals such as "CELL", "NATURE" and others. Time has come for us to share
our success and experience with those alumni who are still in career
development, and with our home--Nanjing and China. A formal overseas
alumni association will be of great help to this international exchange of
biomedical science and technology;
5) To resolve such practical issues as the alumni directory compiling
and updating, homepage setting up and maintenance, newsletter compiling and
circulation, alumni requests for Nanjing campus (such as obtaining
certificates for Board exam and transcripts), and others as relevant.
6) To facilitate the establishment of local or regional alumni
organizations which might better serve local alumni for various purposes.
All alumni who now reside outside China and once studied, worked or
associated with NMU will automatically become the member of this association.
To set up an official ONMUAA homepage for information exchange is the number
one priority of this organizing process. Alumni information from
Nanjing and other places in China will be posted here for your reference.
The newsletter will make the information exchange better. The alumni directory
will provide updated alumni addresses and telephone numbers. In this way, we
will be globally well connected.
FORMATION OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE AND ITS FUNCTIONS
The Steering Committee was recently formed by a group of alumni
volunteers, in North America, from various NMU schools or departments
including many school years wherever available. Most of us have been active
over the years in alumni affairs, and have already done a lot of work in
alumni networking. We would like to continue our contribution toward the
formation of our ONMUAA.

PLAN ON ONMUAA ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE
The Steering Committee, including the International Group Leaders, will
guide and facilitate the forming process of this Overseas NMU alumni
association, which will take the form of Board-President-Executives.
The Steering Committee help democratically elect the International Board
of Directors (number and nomination format subject to debating). The
Directors (Board Members) select the President from the nominated candidates.
The President forms her/his own Executives--term administration, which
needs approval by the International Board. The President manages the
Executives and reports to the Board of Directors. The Directors evaluate
the Presidents' work and approve her/his proposals in her/his term.
See the bylaw later for details.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Interested alumni, when you receive this letter, please do the
following:
1) Please present your suggestions on how to form the ONMUAA;
2) Take part in any above listed task groups you feel interested in;
3) Nominate 1-2 International Group leaders from/for your country
or region (non-U.S.) to join the Steering Committee (subject to Committee's
approval);
4) Nominate International Board of Directors as your school
(department) representatives from any country where you have contacts
including the country you are now studying or working in and including
yourself. Initial suggestion is every 10 to 20 alumni generate ONE
representative to form the Board, which is subject to debating;
5) Make effor to collect alumni name and information (subject to
the use of the general public) which you know, and forward to Qingyi Wei,
PH78, at above address;
6) Join the discussion on any issues related to the formation of
ONMUAA, especially the comments on the bylaw writeup;
7) Join the voting to select the final International Board members
(directors);
8) Do anything you deem relevant to this issue;
9) Please forward all your reply to the Committee Secretories who
will decide if it's necessary to forward to other Committee members; The
secretories also will count your votes and publicize the results. However,
please feel free to contact any of the above listed individual alumni
directly.
These are our preliminary agendas which are still in development.
Again, we warmly welcome your suggestions. We also encourage each country or
region to form your own NMUA Association or Chapters. Let us use our collective
intelligence and effort, and work together throught the world as a well
unified strong group, to set up the NMU image as one of the best in China.
Your reply WITHIN ONE WEEK is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your
interest and cooperation!
Please also help circulate this letter among those of our
alumni and their families who do not have the internet access, or other
parties who might have interest.
Looking forward to your comments and active participation.
