Fellowships and Awards to Undergraduate Students working in our group
- 1991: Steve Weiss was awarded $1,000 and a 1991 LSA Merit Award
for outstading undergraduates. Four students, among the approximately
16,000 students in the College of Literature, Science, and Arts (LSA)
were given this award in 1991.
- 1992: Peter Kurczynski won the 1992 William L. Williams Prize and
$1,000 for an outstanding thesis submitted by a graduating senior.
- 1993:
Britton Plourde was awarded $1,000 and a 1993 LSA Merit Award for outstading
undergraduates. Five students, among the approximately 16,000 students in
the College of LSA were given this award in 1993.
- 1993:
Britton Plourde won the 1993 William L. Williams Prize and $1000 for
an outstanding thesis submitted by a graduating senior.
- 1993: Britton Plourde was the University of Michigan nominee for the
1993 Apker Award of the American Physical Society.
- 1994: Naia Venturi won an Honorable Mention for the 1994 William L.
Williams Prize and $200 for an outstanding thesis submitted by a
graduating senior.
- 1995: Paul Sholtz was awarded $1,000 and a 1995 LSA Merit Award
for outstading undergraduates. Only two students, out of about 16,000
in the College of LSA were given this award in 1995.
- 1996: Mickey Moore won the Physics Department 1996 Wiley Book
Award.
- 1996: Melody Klaus was awarded $1,000 and a 1996 LSA Merit Award
for outstading undergraduates. Only two students, out of about 16,000
in the College of LSA, were given this award in 1996.
- 1996: Melody Klaus won the 1996 William L. Williams Prize and
$1000 for an outstanding thesis submitted by a graduating senior.
- 1999: After a nation-wide competition,
Amit Mehta was selected by the National Society of Physics Students (SPS)
and the American Physical Society (APS) to present a talk at the
largest physics conference ever: the Centennial Meeting
of the American Physical Society (in Atlanta, 1999).
Finantial support is provided by the National SPS and the APS.
- 1992-2006: ten undergraduate students
co-author papers including: five articles published in Physical Review Letters;
two co-author one published in Nature; one in EPL, one in PRB,
one in Scientific American and Contemporary Physics.

1991-93: Yeong-Lieh Lin was awarded the F. Mock and the F. Moller
Physics Department Graduate Fellowships for outstanding graduate students.
- 1993-94: Xuedong Hu was awarded a 10-month Rackham Graduate
Fellowship for outstanding graduate students
(typically given to one or two physics graduate students each year).
- 1993-94: Yeong-Lieh Lin was awarded a 10-month Rackham Graduate
Fellowship for outstanding graduate students
(typically given to one or two physics graduate students each year).
- 1994-95: Yeong-Lieh Lin was awarded a 12-month Research Partnership
Graduate Fellowship for outstanding graduate students.
- 1996: Yeong-Lieh Lin was awarded the Honorable mention of the
Kent Terwilliger Prize for outstanding Ph.D. Thesis in physics.
- 1993-98: Charles Reichhardt was awarded a 4-year Fellowship
from the Graduate College.
- 1994-96: Cynthia Olson was awarded a 2-year Fellowship
from the Graduate College.
- 1996-98: Cynthia Olson was awarded a Fellowship from
the Sloan Foundation (Summer 1996) and a Fellowship from NASA (1996--98).
- 1997: Xuedong Hu was awarded a Rackham Outstanding Thesis Award
(this year awarded to five Ph.D. Theses throughout the entire
University; and the second time ever that a physics Ph.D. Thesis is
selected).
- 2006: Frontier Research System Technical Award (to Mr. Robert Johansson)

- 2008: Wakate Award from MEXT (Ministry of Education, Science,
Culture, etc.) for Excellence in Research (to Dr. S. Savelev). This is a
very prominent award never given before to a non-Japanese researcher.
