NSCS Quick Facts
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) was chartered at
The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. on April 30, 1994
with 120 new members .
What is NSCS?
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars recognizes outstanding
academic achievement among first- and second-year college students
and offers a wide variety of opportunities for involvement on the campus,
community and national level. NSCS encourages members to become
and remain involved in community service and leadership activities
throughout their college years and beyond. Membership is by invitation
only, based on grade point average.
The Society was founded on the principles of scholarship, leadership
and service.
Each chapter engages in service to its local community and gives members
the chance to develop leadership skills in a variety of leadership
positions.
The national office offers programs and services designed to contribute
to the personal and professional development of members. Benefits of
membership include: scholarships; Service Spring Break trips; NSCS
Career Connection; The Distinguished Scholars Program; NSCS Leadership
Summit; Online communities and resources; and alumni programs.
NSCS At A Glance:
- Interdisciplinary honors organization – representing all undergraduate
majors
- Invites first and second year students in the top 20 percent of
the class or having earned a GPA of 3.4 or better to become members
- One time, lifetime membership fee of $75
- 205 Chapters as of April 30, 2004. Chapters in 49 states (all except
Alaska), Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia
- 375,000 lifetime members
- 70,000 new members join each year
- 2,800 members have served as chapter officers since 1994
- More than $400,000 in scholarships distributed since 1994
- 12,000 middle school students have participated in Planning for
College Success program
- 700 members were recipients of the Presidential Student Service
Award and/or the NSCS/America's Promise Scholar of Promise Award
- 1,250 members, officers and advisors have participated in NSCS
Leadership Summits during the last nine years
- 350 members have participated in Service Spring Break trips
- NSCS is the only honors organization offering community service
spring breaks
- More than 500 members have been selected as members of the Teach
for America Corps
- NSCS was selected as the 2004 Connect America Partner of the Year
for the Points of Light Foundation
- NSCS was elected into the Association of College Honor Societies
in 2004
