James S. Jackson

James S. Jackson received the Ph.D in Social Psychology from Wayne State University and has been the University of Michigan since 1971. In 1994, he was named the Daniel Katz Collegiate Professor and since 1995, has held the position of the Daniel Katz Distinguished University Professor of Psychology. He is the immediate past chair of the Social Psychology Training Program; Director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research; Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education, School of Public Health; Research Scientist at the Institute for Social Research; and Faculty Associate at the Center for Afro-American and African Studies and the Institute of Gerontology. He was a recipient of a Fogarty Senior Postdoctoral International Fellowship, 1993-94, for study in France, where he holds the position of Chercheur Invite, Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches sur la Science, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Gerontological Society of America and the American Psychological Association. He is member or past member of several scientific review panels including he National Aging Council of the National Institute on Aging, National Advisory Mental Health Council, National Institute of Mental Health; the Scientific Panel on Black/White Cancer Survival Differences, National Cancer Institute; Immigration and Racism, European Union; National Collegiate Athletic Association.
He is past chair of the Gerontological Society of America's Task Force on Racial-Minority Group Aging and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation's Minority Access Panel, the National Black Students' Psychological Association, the National Association of Black Psychologist, the Association for the Advancement of Psychology, the National Institute of Health's Human Development II Review Panel, and a former member of the National Academy of Sciences' Committees on the Status of Black Americans and Aging.
Since 1976 he has been the Director of the Program for Research on Black Americans in the Research Center for group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research. In 1990, he established and directs the activities of the African American Mental Health Research Center. He has conducted research and published in several area including race and ethnic relations, health and mental health, adult development and aging, attitudes and attitude change, and African American politics. In addition to numerous scientific articles and chapters, he is editor or author of several recent and forthcoming monographs and books on racism, inter-generational relations, aging, family, health, survey methodology, mental health and political behavior.
